Graham calls for American boots on the ground in Syria

Source: Foreign Policy

Posted By Josh Rogin Tuesday, March 19, 2013 - 2:14 PM

In the face of new reports alleging chemical weapons use in Syria, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called Tuesday for the United States to put American troops inside Syria to secure the WMD sites there.

-snip-

Graham told The Cable in an interview Tuesday that whether or not the attack can be confirmed as the first use of chemical weapons in the 24-month Syrian civil war, the United States must devise and implement a plan to secure Syrian chemical weapons sites and deploy U.S. troops to do it if necessary.

"My biggest fear beyond an Iranian nuclear weapons capability is the chemical weapons in Syria falling in the hands of extremists and Americans need to lead on this issue. We need to come up with a plan to secure these weapons sites, either in conjunction with our partners [or] if nothing else by ourselves," Graham said.

Asked if he would support sending U.S. troops inside Syria for the mission, Graham said yes.

"Absolutely, you've got to get on the ground. There is no substitute for securing these weapons," he said. "I don't care what it takes. We need partners in the region. But I'm here to say, if the choice is to send in troops to secure the weapons sites versus allowing chemical weapons to get in the hands of some of the most violent people in the world, I vote to cut this off before it becomes a problem."

Troops in the middle of a Civil War between the Syrian Army, Sunni population, PLO,HAMAS,Hezebulla,Sunni Lebanese population,Iraqi Sunni population,Sh ia populations in both Iran and Iraq, Alqaeda elements in North Africa and lets not forget the Muslim Brotherhood of course in Egypt. All to to secure the chemical stock pile of Assad. Now we know Iran's Revolutionary guard unit has been secretly operating with the Syrian military and Iran's military also has a large supply of these weapons in case of an attack by the U.S. and Israel. Why don't we just invite the Taliban and North Koreans to the Party while you are at it Lindsey. They have been wanting easier access to U.S. Troops and Israel all along. They will have them all in one area now for their Jihad. He sure has a lot of confidence in our Arab Allies. Lets just hope it is not like Custer's last stand.

Apparently that's not his program:

from Wikipedia:

In 1998, according to the Congressional daily newspaper The Hill, Graham was describing himself on his website as an Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm veteran. In reality, he never left South Carolina. Graham responded "I have not told anybody I'm a combatant," he said. "I'm not a war hero, and never said I was. I never intended to lie.

Clearly though, he likes to talk the talk sometimes.

on the ground or even planes in the air.

(James) Stavridis (the head of NATO) said that the NATO Patriot missile batteries currently deployed in Turkey have the capability to shoot down Syrian military aircraft in a radius of 20 miles.

After the hearing, Levin directly endorsed the idea of using the Patriot missile batteries in Turkey to establish a no-fly zone inside Syria in an interview with The Cable. "I believe there should be the next ratcheting up of military effort and that would include going after some of Syria's air defenses," Levin said.

Regarding the establishment of a no-fly zone inside Syria, Levin said that would help both protect innocent civilians and speed the end of the conflict.

"You could protect that kind of a zone with these Patriot missiles, leaving the missiles in Turkey but having the zone inside the Syrian border," he said. "It is a way without putting boots on the ground and in a way that would be fairly cautious, that would put additional pressure on Assad and also create a zone where Syrian people who are looking for protection and safety could come without crossing the border and becoming refugees."

http://thecable.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2013/03/19/top_democrat_endorses_syria_no_fly_zone

Levin's idea seems to be different from the extensive, wide-ranging NFZ that NATO did in Libya. This would be limited to a strip of land in northern Syria enforced by missiles based in Syria.

such animal as innocent civilians in a Civil War. It needs to be defined what it is. Who are the Alawites trying to overthrow Assad? He just wants to tilt the conflict to one side or the other. If the Alawites were included in trying to overthrow Assad, he would not be in power. It is a War between the Alawites, Sunnis, and Kurds.

So all Syrians lose their 'innocence' because the belong to one group or another? Does that then mean that the killing of civilians either intentionally or as 'collateral damage' is acceptable in civil wars because they are not 'innocent'?

"Who are the Alawites trying to overthrow Assad? He just wants to tilt the conflict to one side or the other."

Alawites are 10-12% of Syria's population. Your statement could be interpreted as condoning the use of Syria's military to maintain their undemocratic hold ("tilt the conflict to one side&quot over the Syrian population. Whites represented about 20% of South Africa's population in apartheid days. I do not think most liberals condoned the white government's use of the military and police to maintain their undemocratic (only whites could vote after all) hold over South Africa's population.

Why do we make excuses for Assad and Syria's Alawites that we would not have made for South Africa's whites?

with what happens in this country than something which only benefits the Top percent in our country and their Empire. It is a Civil War and not just bought on by one man. I could care less which side wins because both are led by their religious ideology. The only thing our Congress is interested in is power and money. The Alawites have been in control of Syria for Decades, ever since they overthrew the Sunnis with the help of the French giving them the upper hand. The French was just interested in the same thing, power and resources. I'm glad some of these Old Geezards are retiring in Congress. A lot more of them need to be put in the pasture. And the only reason Turkey probably gets attack, is because they didn't mind their own business. This is a country that invaded Cyprus and have problems within their own borders. I don't feel it is our obligation to protect them at all.
