‘No Confidence’ Vote for Head of N.Y.U.
Source: NYT
The faculty of New York Universitys largest college this week approved a vote of no confidence in John Sexton, the universitys president, handing him an embarrassing setback at a time when he is aggressively selling the universitys expansion plans at home and abroad.
The vote, 298 to 224 (with 47 abstaining), took place via electronic balloting from Monday through Friday. Full-time tenured and tenure-track professors were asked to respond to the statement: The faculty of Arts and Science has no confidence in John Sextons leadership. Voter participation was 83 percent.
A statement by that colleges Faculty Senators Council Caucus said, In the coming days and weeks, we anticipate that the N.Y.U. community, along with the F.A.S. Senators, will be discussing the ramifications of this vote, the circumstances that gave rise to it, and the next appropriate course of decisions and actions.
Dr. Sexton issued his own statement, which concluded: In the university setting, we believe in debate and criticism; it helps us improve. That will be particularly important in the months and years ahead, because we are at a moment that compels meaningful change in higher education. It is also the case that faculty must be at the center of the academic endeavor and involved in the decision-making. We have taken some important steps in that direction and, particularly with this vote in mind, that effort will continue. I look forward to working with the faculty to maintain N.Y.U.s academic trajectory and prepare for the challenges ahead.

Sanity Claws
(21,849 posts)I think NYU and many other universities have lost their way. They no longer see their role as higher education.
What the hell does "trajectory," a word Sexton used in his statement, have to do with their core mission? He is nothing but an overpaid salesman.
MHO is once universities get back to their core mission, we can see more reasonable tuition. Too much money is being spent on overpaid administrators like Sexton.
BTW, John Sexton was on The Colbert Report a week or two ago. I thought he looked like a fool. Colbert was smarter than Sexton. And don't just mean wittier.

Celebration
(15,812 posts)Not public.
Apparently one issue is that he is hiring high profile people and paying them high salaries while most faculty salaries have stagnated. Meanwhile, tuition costs have gone way up.
I don't really have an opinion on this because I don't know anything about it, but this has nothing to do with state legislatures.

(24,979 posts)What do these conservative generalities have to do with the NYU case?

(38,437 posts)and you posted immediately below that admission.
Having a bad morning, or do you just enjoy shitting on people for no reason?
I have deleted the OFFENDING post. Happy now?

(24,979 posts)Rather than engaging the material, you reflexively threw out a right-wing talking point about the character of academics and the crisis of the universities. I didn't defecate on you or anyone else, I'm not offended, and if my pointing something out to you makes you think before you post next time, it's a favor.

(38,437 posts)My discussion points were 100% valid for public institutions. First hand knowledge. In the room, planning the recruiting, executing, budgeting, etc.
The only difference is public versus private in the context of state funding.
Your problem is that if someone's point doesn't line up exactly with your preconceived (and wrong!) notion, you soil yourself. So, go change your clothes, and come back for further education in an area where you are completely devoid of any facts.

(24,979 posts)You seem capable only of speaking in irrelevant scatological terms that do not befit any discussion. Perhaps you're stuck in some childhood phase that makes you obsess with "soiling" behavior, but it's not my problem.

(38,437 posts)I am a frontlines guy on this issue, and you bring nothing but a foul attitude.
You want to debate this issue or continue being a jerk? I would be happy to talk facts, but I'm done with the shit slinging.
Your move.
