Chris Hayes to Take Over 8 P.M. Show on MSNBC
By BRIAN STELTER
Chris Hayes will take over the 8 p.m. time slot on MSNBC in the next month, the channel is planning to announce on Thursday morning, hours after the current host of that hour, Ed Schultz, said he was moving from the weekdays to the weekends.
Mr. Hayes, a liberal intellectual who has hosted a well-regarded weekend morning program on MSNBC for the past 18 months, is a protege of Rachel Maddow, the highest-rated host on the channel. He will become the lead-in for her 9 p.m. program, The Rachel Maddow Show.
The change is predicated on the belief that MSNBC can win a wider audience with Mr. Hayes than it did with Mr. Schultz, a champion of the working class whose bluster didnt always pair well with Ms. Maddow and the channels other prime time program, The Last Word with Lawrence ODonnell. Mr. Hayes, on the other hand, is just as wonky as Ms. Maddow and Mr. ODonnell, and is a regular contributor to both of their programs.
Mr. Hayess promotion was described by people who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it had not been officially announced by the channel yet. Once it takes effect, Mr. Hayes, 34, will be the youngest host of a prime-time show on any of the countrys major cable news channels, all of which seek out youthful viewers but tend to have middle-aged hosts and a core audience made up of senior citizens. Of Mr. Schultzs one million viewers last year, for example, only 249,000 were between the ages of 25 and 54.

(102,286 posts)is a bad thing. Apparently that is the attitude, given that those who speak out are usually relegated to the "off hours" (Martin Bashir comes to mind)
Does that mean he's working seven days a week, or does he give up the weekend show?
I like him, but I don't buy the "Ed didn't pair well." MSNBC needs more of that good old-fashioned class warfare, up with workers, stuff. I like Rachel, but she's a little too snuggly with the MIC sometimes, and needs MORE concern for the poor, and middle class. She's a bit heavy on social issues, which sort of plays into the whole "too much social issues, not enough economic issues" problem with the corporate media. It's by design of course. Still, I watch her, so...
Nothing wrong with Ed...Listening to his much more liberal radio show right now, in fact. Anything with actual callers, is going to be more liberal than stuff a staff, and host can get through the editors and producers of a big-time network show anyway.
hlthe2b
(102,286 posts)Early on, I had to get used to the fact that Ed can frequently sound like Limbaugh (not what he's saying, of course, but simply his Midwestern accent, syntax, and general vocal style).... But, frankly that, plus the fact he really knows how to relate to a demographic that might not ordinarily watch MSNBC, makes this a loss, IMO.
Chris is good--no doubt about it, but he'll have to change his presentation a great deal to fill this new shortened format.
But, no, they are reporting he is being replaced on the weekend show, though no replacement has been announced. So, he'll only be doing the weekday stint.

(19,841 posts)my MIL is an avid watcher of Ed. She tells her Fox watching friends to watch it. How can we tell MSNBC they will lose this audience--the ones who need to have their soundbites delivered with directness, energy, and regular folks vocabulary?
Please if you must replace Ed on weeknights--find another Ed.

And, heaven knows they feel most comfortable with the "beltway" types. Ed was never going to become one of those.

(19,841 posts)They giveth Ed and they taketh away Ed.
Another Ed could be found, if Ed wants to move on. The fact that they're not even trying does not bode well.
I have nothing against Chris Hayes. I like him. It's not an either/or.

(511 posts)First time I heard him I immediately thought he was a male version of Maddow with that rapid fire and overly dramatic delivery. And then I read in the piece that he's Maddow's protege. He has an annoying way of showing off his superior [?] intellect and challenging his audience to keep up with him while trying to fully comprehend what he's trying to say. No style of his own so he immitates Maddow's. I've always switched to another channel when he's been on Maddow's show, now I'll be watching any other channel but Fox during his time slot. Ed Shultz does a far more effective job tackling the issues and got straight to the point rather than the pontificating and meandering style we can expect from Chris Hayes.

(536 posts)Chris is fabulous. He's funny. He laughs and makes others laugh. Couldn't be more liberal. Condenses so well. Unbelievably smart. Great interviewer. Ed is none of those. Listen to his radio show. He's a bully. Colbert calls him "a chunk of smoked gouda". Here's Ed's top two questions- "How does it feel-blah, blah, blah?" "What was it like, blah, blah, blah?"

(487 posts)No doubt Ed Schultz is extremely smart. He comes from a jock background (college and even some pro football in Canada) and carries that athlete's dedication and passion in his with-the-people persona.
Chris has the background of the intellectual who was in Science Club and played on the Equations and On-Sets teams. I find him extremely likable and funny as well as informative.
This is the perfect move for both. I didn't like Chris' eeeeeaaaarly weekend time slot, and Ed works best when he's out with the people like he did in Wisconsin and Ohio. Can't wait to see them!

(261 posts)Will Chris Hayes keep his wonderful 2 hour weekend show as well?
I like his Up with Chris show, but 7 days a week, for a married man with a child, I can't imagine he will do both the 5 nights a week show and the weekend 2 hours each Saturday and Sunday. Something will have to go. I'll miss him if he leaves the weekend.
As for Ezra Klein, he already has a full time job at the Washington Post, and he's very good as a stand-in substitute for either Rachel or Ed or Lawrence O'Donnell. He also does interviews on an almost daily basis as a guest on on or another of MSNBC's daytimes shows when the topic is the economy, taxes, legislation involving the budget, etc.
My main concern is what will happen to the weekend Up with Chris show, which I have come to love.

(12,233 posts)It was amazing discussions without a lot of time limits and with really intelligent people who didn't dumb down their words. Even the Republican reps couldn't throw out talking points and get away with it. They had to have reasoned logic behind their arguments. And once they tried to use reasonable logic, the fallacy of their statements and the argument fell apart. They don't have real data or accurate account of what is happening to people and what should happen or what will best work. I especially lived the $2 trillion dollar coin argument... It became clear that money at such a large economic, government run budget, that money is quite fake and not like most people's bank accounts where the money is based on pay from labor.

My dad said, "I like to hang out with smart people because I might learn something." He was a pipefitter at a refinery AND an attorney, thanks to night school on the GI Bill.
Chris is usually pretty good at controlling his guests and not letting them get into a screaming match, unlike Bill Maher and Tweety and some others. I can't stand it when they have 3 people all yelling over each other.
Ezra Klein has a very dry humor. He said he admired Turtle Man for his "good looks". He said on election night, "Speaker Boehner has been reelected to his House seat, doubtless a victory for Orange-Americans everywhere."
