Jonylah Watkins Dies: 6-Month-Old Dead After Being Shot 5 Times In Chicago

Last edited Tue Mar 12, 2013, 10:50 AM - Edit history (2)

The 6-month-old infant girl shot five times on Chicago's South Side Monday died in the hospital Tuesday morning.

Jonylah Watkins was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital Monday afternoon in serious-to-critical condition after being shot in the 6500 block of South Maryland Avenue in the city's Woodlawn neighborhood around 12:48 p.m. Her father, Jonathan Watkins, had been changing her diaper in the front passenger seat of a Chevy Venture minivan when a gunman approached them and opened fire. He fled in a waiting car.

Jonylah had sustained wounds in her lung, liver, leg, shoulder and bowel or intestine, according to DNAinfo Chicago, and had undergone at least five hours of surgery.

"This morning, the baby passed away," the Rev. Corey Brooks, who is acting as a spokesman for the family, told the Chicago Tribune. "We have another tragedy in the city of Chicago."

Clearly they are just uninformed of the law. Maybe an ad campaign to remind people that what they are doing is illegal? Some billboards? Maybe some laws that require billboards? Or another law to require people to read the billboards?

Criminals do not care about the law.

Blue states should sue the fuck out of red states.

We support their existence with federal tax money, and they pay us back by filling our streets with their fetish item.

Keep burying your head in the sand - that's fine. Just don't bullshit anyone else with this "gun free" crapola.

The gangs recruit people/associates with clean records to straw purchase guns. The fact is, they don't have to travel far to do it.

The same goes for Arizona/Mexico. All the right wing pigs squeal like stuck pigs over a few guns that slipped through "fast and furious" but don't say a fucking peep about the thousands that fly over the border every year. And then puke out their usual stupidity about "strong firearm laws in Mexico".

If you want to break the law you can do it anywhere. Not just in AZ or on the IN border. Straw purchases are against the law. That law can be broken anywhere.

Just a random responsible gun owner walking down the street goes crazy and shoots a baby. Sure that's it. The fact that the baby's father who was also shot is a known gang member had absolutely nothing to do with it. Yep.

Enough already. If there wasn't such a fine distinction between legal and illegal, we could get a better handle on this. Enough of the whining and paranoia from those who want to be ready to kill another human being. They are not worthy of our attention. I don't care what right they claim or what they fear. An infant died!!!!!!! Oh my gosh we are insane. That poor baby!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tragic, A small baby shot 5 times, hit by more bullets than the father...was the baby used as a shield?

Dads a gang member and mom "Jonylah's mother, Judy Watkins, was previously shot while carrying the child. "

Sounds like Jonylah never had a chance.

Her father, Jonathan Watkins, had been changing her diaper in the front passenger seat of a Chevy Venture minivan when a gunman approached them and opened fire. He fled in a waiting car.

Now the general rule on the use of pronouns is to refer to the previous noun in the sentence.
Technically the previous noun is the "Shooter" but in between the word "Them" is used. Thus which word is the word "he" referring to? The Shooter or the father, who is one of the subjects of the pronoun "them"?

A second rule as to pronouns is that if they is ANY possibility of confusion if a pronoun is used as opposed to the name, you do NOT use a pronoun.

I am NOT an English Nazi, but when you see a problem as to who fled in the car, the Shooter or the Father, you have to point out the problem. This is just bad writing, not from an English Writing point of view (I never was able to get above a "C" in school on written test due my extensive use of run on sentences, which I am still addicted to) but from a fundamental communication point of view. DON"T USE A PRONOUN IF IT CAN LEAD TO CONFUSION AS TO WHO IS MEANT BY THE PRONOUN.

I know the overall trend in this thread is and will be to mourn the death of this baby, it is a crime, much worse then the crime this writing represents, and I also regret the death of this baby for something she had no control over (Someone trying to shoot her father). Such crimes should be prevented but saying that, the writing is terrible.

I totally get your point. But I was pretty clear that it was the shooter who fled. How could the dad flee, being wounded and leaving his shot-up infant, while the shooter stays with the baby?

29. Guns are one part of the equation
Tue Mar 12, 2013, 02:46 PM
Mar 2013

But a just as important other part of the equation is the unabated growth of gangs post 9/11, where the focus shifted to terrorism. Chicago is primarily ruled by the Gangster Disciples, the Latin Kings, the Vice Lords, the Black P Stones and various other smaller gangs. These people are not deterred by restrictions on gun sales, some like the Latin Kings have connections to the drug cartels and have an endless supply of artillery. In Chicago alone, a gang like the Latin Kings have circa 25,000 members, and all those members 'earn their stripes' by committing murders, extortion, robberies etc.

The problem of gangs needs to be dealt with, just as much as gun control side of the equation. And that's something few are talking about. It's overly simplistic to think this is just about guns.
