'Soul Train' creator Don Cornelius found dead

Chicago Tribune reporter
8:30 a.m. CST, February 1, 2012

"Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius was found dead at his Sherman Oaks home early this morning, according to the L.A. Times.

Law enforcement sources said police arrived at Cornelius' home at about 4 a.m. He apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case was ongoing.

The sources said there was no sign of foul play but that the Los Angeles Police Department is still investigating the case.

I will miss you. If it wasn't for you and Soul Train, we would have had to watch that American Blandstand. I can hear the whistle..."SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLL TRAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNN!!!!"

RIP, Mr. Don Cornelius.

particularly when they come from barrier-busting cultural icons.

When my sisters and I weren't laughing about how the white kids danced on American Bandstand, we were wishing there was a black version of it.

He was 76. Was he in good health?

I lived in Chicago off and on in the 70's and at one point had a black roommate (I'm white) who claimed at the time that it was "common knowledge" in Chicago's black community that Cornelius was a heroin addict. I know nothing else about this but my roommate's statements, but maybe this is a possible explanation , if Cornelius had never , even in his advancing age, kicked the alleged habit. I've known people that chose to end their lives rhather than suffer their addiction another day. Again, nothing but speculation based on 30+ year old conversations, but if true, could conceivably have been at least a contributing factor in Mr. Cornelius doing this.
I loved Soul Train, and whatever caused him to take his life, it's terribly sad.

Soul Train, to me, was far superior to American Bandstand. And the dancing was far better, as seen in many youtube videos!
