US orders Fung Wah to suspend bus service

Source: Boston Globe

The US Department of Transportation said Tuesday it has ordered Fung Wah Bus Transportation Inc. to “immediately cease passenger service and provide its entire fleet of 28 motorcoaches for thorough and detailed safety inspections by qualified inspectors.”

Fung Wah operates service primarily between Boston and New York.

A Tuesday story in the Globe noted that the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities was requesting the Transportation Department’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to shut down Fung Wah until it addresses safety concerns.

In a letter to the federal agency, state officials said Fung Wah does not understand basic safety requirements and is “currently incapable of maintaining a fleet of motor coaches.”

It's like high speed rail. But it's a bus. And usually one with black smoke coming from the engine.

The drivers of Fung Wah do not know what fear is.

from New York to Boston. We seemed to be doing OK until we hit the I-91 cutting North through CT. The driver cranked that bus up to around 80 and started moving... left lane, center lane, left... all the way over to the right and then way over to the left. I thought the frame was going to shake off the body when he took the exit onto the I-84 toward Boston.

Three days later I took Amtrak back to New York.

For example, all air control communications - no matter where - are conducted in English.

Of course, in the United States, anyone is free to use whatever language they like. But as a condition of commercial transportation licensing, it's another ball of wax.

Failing to do so is an immediate "Out-of'service" order under the provisions set forth by the FMCSA under rule 391.11(b)(2).

GoBus has free WiFi, vehicles are clean, etc. Ends up taking roughly the same time as a plane, without the lines and patdown, at a small fraction the price.

Fung Wah's been a continual problem:

Fung Wah Using Charter Buses To Get Around Federal Shutdown Order

February 26, 2013 2:58 PM

BOSTON (CBS) – Fung Wah Bus Transportation, Inc. has found a way around a federal order to “immediately cease passenger service” by contracting outside charter buses to transport passengers back and forth from South Station to New York City.

On Tuesday, The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued the shutdown order after a WBZ-TV I-Team investigation that found major safety concerns on a number of the company’s buses.

An FMCSA spokesperson later clarified the order, saying it only prohibits Fung Wah from transporting passengers in its 28 buses.

“The company, if it chooses, has the prerogative to rent or lease other vehicles; the company is not shut down,” Duane DeBruyne said in a statement to WBZ-TV.

Just like airplanes - they last a long time (million miles +) IF they are properly maintained and repaired. Operating conditions matter, too - from a couple of the posts here, the FungWah drivers "Could break an anvil in a sandbox!"*

I took Fung Wah a couple of times, about 3 years ago. Had no problems but we certainly got to Boston really fast! And man, it's great to do take-out Chinese food for bringing on the trip.
I've also taken Megabus and Bolt. On one trip with one of them, the one starting with a "B", we had to make a stop to buy some engine oil. A couple of us helped our driver figure out where to pour it in! But that was just one time.
Traveling by bus is a lot more fun than sitting in a private car.
BTW - does Fung Wah really mean "obstruct sleep"?

Never had a problem with it. Just thought it was a great service but this was like maybe 15 years ago. I hope they get their safety issues taken care of.
