Arkansas makes gun-permit records private under new law

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (Reuters) - Arkansas on Friday became the latest state to exempt from public disclosure the names and zip codes of gun owners, those with permits to carry concealed weapons and applicants for gun permits.

The measure, signed into law by the state's lieutenant governor, came in response to a New York newspaper's decision late last year to publish the names and addresses of thousands of gun permit holders on its website after 26 people were killed in a shooting rampage at an elementary school in Connecticut.

In a rare maneuver allowed under Arkansas law, Lieutenant Governor Mark Darr, a Republican, signed the bill into law while Democratic Governor Mike Beebe was attending a National Governors Association meeting in Washington.

Voters elect the governor and lieutenant governor separately in Arkansas and state law empowers the lieutenant governor to take such an action if the governor is out of state.

They are so eaten up with themselves they hate anyone new in the area and any idea to win elections. They chase off anyone who is interested in politics and wants to participate.

I have been branded a pariah in Carroll County and although a paid member of both the committee and the Women's Club (yes, the Women's Club,) I am excluded from meetings - actually not even notified - and last I heard, they had decided not to have any meetings at all, until the middle of 2014 "when people are interested in elections again"

What a horrible looking face Mark Darr has. Our only hope is a stroke. Note the high color on his cheeks; looks like high blood pressure to me. Maybe some one will start sending him donuts as a daily gift.

on Darr's appearance, does anyone have any comments on the SUBSTANCE of the measure? Make no mistake, Gov. Beebe would have signed it had he been in-state.

I'm torn on this. I can see and agree with (and, conversely, not see and disagree with) portions of both sides' arguments.

I think other states are trying to exclude gun permit info from public records.
