Nevada's governor signs online gambling bill

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Nevada has legalized online gambling, speeding a bill through joint committees and both houses of the legislature in less than four hours.

The state's governor, Republican Brian Sandoval who also is a former chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission, had signed the emergency measure by 4 p.m. PST Thursday.

Nevada wanted to beat New Jersey, its East Coast casino rival, to the online gambling punch. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie previously vetoed an online wagering bill but indicated he may sign an amended version next week.

Earlier this month, Delaware sought bids from vendors to have games up and running no later than Sept. 30.

Now that lawmakers have passed a web poker bill faster than pocket Aces can get cracked, they can move just as quickly to tax fast food and ban smokers from working in hospitals.

Surely, I jest.

But when lawmakers work as quickly as they did Thursday – both houses passed the measure within an hour – and the governor immediately signs the bill, should anyone stop to ponder: What’s the big rush?

I could wonder why they can't even muster a serious public discussion of the state's antiquated tax system in the 25 years I have covered the Legislatuire but they can fast-track (an "emergency measure!) a web poker bill. Really?

In the early 80s, the Christian Evangelicals were a moderate force pushing for the REPEAL of gambling and especially prostitution.

While the latter has nothing to do with the bill, I find it funny the Republicans are the force that pushed for this bill.
