Workers Cleaning Target Stores Threaten to Strike

Non-union janitors who clean Target stores in Minnesota say they'll go on strike unless their employers agree by noon on Sunday to meet and discuss alleged crimes.
The workers are employed by three janitorial contractorsPrestige Maintenance USA, Diversified Maintenance Systems, and Carlson Building Maintenanceand work inside Target facilities in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The strike threat follows a series of OSHA charges alleging that employees of those companies were denied proper safety training and locked inside of Target stores, and National Labor Relations Board charges alleging that they were retaliated against for organizing. The charges and the strike threat were spearheaded by the Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en la Lucha (CTUL), a Twin Cities labor group which, as The Nation reported, has been organizing retail cleaning workers for two years.
I guess Id say Im not scared, Diversified employee and CTUL activist Alejandro Quirino told The Nation in Spanish. Because Im fed up and sick and tired of how theyve treated us, and how our demands have been ignored. And thats why Im going to go on strike. If I get fired, I know I was fighting for whats right, and putting in what I could to fight for whats fair.
CTUL is demanding that contractors meet to discuss the alleged safety and labor law violations, which it says include the firing of two workers less than a week after one of them had appeared in a campaign video. Management told one of my co-workers that if a worker tries to strike or organize with their co-workers, theyll be fired, said Quirino.

(4,868 posts)I worked at a Target for 5 years. I'm sure it was a different contractor but those cleaners were treated like SHIT. I saw management go off on them and berate them more than once because they knew they didn't didn't have any recourse. I saw one person fired over a 99 cent putty knife (I guess they didn't realize some of us in the vicinity could understand Spanish). Target treats their employees like shit so just imagine how their contract labor is treated.

(9,893 posts)Well, I haven't been in a Walmart in years, and now you report that Target isn't any better.
Any word on K-Mart?

(4,868 posts)Minimum wage, barely any benefits. Target use to be a lot better. Target brags about how much they give back to the community but in reality they start their cashiers at or near minimum wage. Target is Walmart with a prettier trendier face. Kmart and Sear I can't imagine are any better. I know people say "those jobs are meant for teens, blah blah blah" but in some towns they're the only game in town and it isn't just teens working there.

Lots of people leave and lots seem to exist on nothing at all.
I remember when the U.S. was a halfway decent place. That ended when Reagan came in and it only changes now when there's some sort of bubble--the tech bubble under Clinton and the real estate bubble under Bush II. There seems to have been little real growth for many years.

(4,868 posts)And instead of placing the blame on where it belongs we're told it was the greedy American workers and Union members who dared ask for a living wage and health care that ruined this country.
