Oregon lawmakers drop attempt to ban the sale of assault weapons and of high-capacity gun clips

Highly publicized bills that would ban the sale of high-capacity gun magazines as well as semi-automatic miltary-style rifles now appear to be off the table at the Oregon Legislature.

Sen. Ginny Burdick, D-Portland, said Wednesday that she is backing off an attempt to push through a bill on gun clips that she drafted following the December shootings at the Clackamas Mall.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Floyd Prozanski, D-Eugene, who is another key figure in the gun-control debate, said he doesn't plan to take up Burdick's legislation or another bill in the House that would bar the sale of semi-automatic military-style rifles often known as assault weapons.

"I personally think that the high-capacity magazines and semi-automatic weapon issues need to be done at the federal level," said Prozanski.

And I applaud both Senators Prozanski and Burdick decision to enact reasonable, and common sense gun control legislation that respects and observes the RKBA and yet leaves room for public safety.


--Ban guns in the Capitol. Under the measure, Prozanski said, those with a concealed handgun license could still bring a gun into the building with the permission of the legislative administrator or law enforcement.

--Expand background checks to also cover private sales and transfers between individuals. There would be an exemption for sales or transfers between immediate family members.

--Ban concealed handgun licensees from carrying guns onto school grounds. However school districts would be able to opt out of the ban under the measure.

--Require live-fire training to obtain a concealed handgun license. Prozanski said most courses for the license already require this training.

2. I can't think of a reason why CHL training SHOULDN'T incorporate live rounds

Once a bullet is fired, you cannot unfire it - but you are still the eyes, the mind, and the will of every bullet you fire.

A sobering thought. And a great idea for Oregon's CHL classes.

I might even go so far as to recommend live fire training not only with the firearm the applicant intends to carry, but with other designs (semi-automatic and revolver), and calibers so as to find their 'comfort zone'.

13. Yes, given I grew up in Oregon I'm well aware of that

However the population in Eastern Oregon are small. Go look at the SoS's office for returns in those counties, they are out numbered by the more liberal areas. I grew up in Southern Oregon when it was still very bigoted (though parts are still pretty bad). Jackson County went for Obama in 2008 (I wish I could say the same for 2012), Josephine County is a lost cause.

The Ds have the majority on both sides of the legislature and they have a D governor. No excuses.

If we want to have a Democratic majority in the legislatures, both state and federal, we have to be smart about gun control. Proposing draconian bills based on emotion will only serve to elect more Republicans.
