Harry Reid Files For Cloture On Hagel Nomination

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) filed for cloture on the nomination of Chuck Hagel as the secretary of defense on Wednesday, saying it was the first time in history that such a nomination faced a filibuster.

"What a shame," Reid said on the Senate floor. "But, that's the way it is."

The Senate will vote to end debate on Friday, ultimately requiring 60 votes to proceed to final confirmation.

Senate leader sets stage for vote on Hagel

BY BY RICHARD LARDNER

TOPICS: FROM THE WIRES, NEWS, POLITICS NEWS

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate’s top Democrat has set the stage for a full Senate vote by the end of the week on President Barack Obama’s nomination of Chuck Hagel to be defense secretary.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid filed a motion on Wednesday to limit debate and force a vote on Hagel’s nomination. Democrats hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate and have the numbers to confirm Hagel on a majority vote. But they would need the support of five Republicans before an up-or-down vote on the president’s pick to head the Defense Department would be allowed if the GOP decided to filibuster. Republicans have indicated they might delay a vote.

A divided Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday voted to approve Hagel by a 14-11 vote along partisan lines.

Must have been the new comers cheering his filibuster bluster. This is nothing new for Reid, I wanted him gone yesterday.

Harry hasn't figured out Republicans are Nihilistic sociopaths who can't be trusted. Mitch McConnell hasn't told the truth since he admitted homosexual behavior to get out of the army.

until your post, with my own follow up with Google. Whether he's gay or not is not what I find striking. It's that apparently he desperately wanted out of the Army in a time of war (Vietnam) after serving only four months and that he used his family's political connections to put pressure on the Army to get discharged. There's apparently a file on the discharge hearing labeled Transcript Of Court Martial that has a very sketchy summary of the proceedings and McConnell never responded to requests to fill in the blanks on what actually occurred.

What I find astonishing is that he's now presiding over the threatened filibuster of a Vietnam war veteran when he himself ducked the war and that the press doesn't seem to see any story there.

Hagel should be confirmed, he is the President's choice and the right kind of person for that job.

It's Brennan I would filibuster, until they carried me out on a stretcher.

The Republicans (and more than a few Democrats) would be quite happy to confirm Netanyahu any time they got a chance, venal panderers that they undoubtedly are.
