Protester hurls shoes at Paul Bremer, former US envoy to Iraq
Source: NBC News
Former U.S. diplomat Paul Bremer had shoes thrown at him during a meeting held Wednesday in the British Parliament in an attack reminiscent of the 2008 shoe hurling directed at President George W. Bush.
The incident occurred as Bremer, a former U.S. envoy to Iraq, was giving a speech at a meeting organized by the Henry Jackson Society, a British-based think tank named for the late U.S. senator from Washington state. Bush, who appointed Bremer to his post in Iraq was the target of a similar attack when he visited Baghdad in 2008. Shoe hurling is a traditional Arab gesture of disrespect.
In the latter incident, a man stood up, seemingly to address Bremer, and announced he was delivering two messages, one from Saddam Hussein and one from the Iraqi people.
"This is the first message," the man said, as he threw the first shoe. Bremer can be seen ducking, but he then started laughing, in seeming disbelief.

(135,425 posts)His crew ain't done, apparently....I think we can say with some degree of certainty that the shoe tosser is a Sunni. He might even be from Tikrit.
But trying to insist that he is delivering a message from 'the Iraqi people?' Maybe the ones who are Sunni and benefited from the Ba'ath regime, but a huge population of Shi'a are delighted that Saddam is gone, and a lot of Kurds aren't arguing either.
Iraq is a frigging mess, but it's more transparent now. The brutality used to be hidden.

Just because things are more apparent doesn't make them necessarily better.

(4,309 posts)Starting an illegal and immoral war has consequences, even if it is just a shoe thrown at you.
Hi,
I wonder what happened to the guy. I'm surprised the idiot son could move quick enough to duck out of the way. An illegal and morally unjustified war while millions and millions are made by the criminal ruling class from it.
Peace

(47,992 posts)player clicked to throw the shoe.
I think some people complained about it, so it went away pretty quickly, because when you hit GW with the shoe that you just threw there was the BIG red SPLATTER complete with a squashing sound.
I actually agree with that critique, but then I personally remember JFK & Bobby Kennedy.
It felt VERY good to hit GW with the shoe, when you managed to do so, but there should probably be some result other than "blood".

(86,775 posts)have his say it sounded like he was telling the guy to his right that this has happened to him before. I like the part where he got to say FU a couple times.
I don't think it matters much if he was Sunni or Shi'a, Bush F'd Up his country and killed a bunch of his family, I'd throw shoes at that slimebag myself. Bremmer is the equivalent of an economic hit man and the conditions he was sent to Iraq to foist upon all the people of that country is so unbelievably criminal that that POS ought to be sitting in a cell in The Hague right now. Check out The Shock Doctrine, it exposes him as well as many of the other criminals of his ilk.
I'm glad to see that Bremmer gets called out on the whole thing.

(27,461 posts)a lot of the neocons call themselves "Scoop Jackson Democrats", they were actually Democrats and converted at some point, maybe around the time of the Reagan revolution. It's a good bet that the "Henry Jackson Society" is basically a neocon think tank.

(27,461 posts)surely their great glorious war will be commemorated in a big way, maybe on Iraq Statue Day?
Someone has apparently found Paul Bremer, now we need to find where the others are hiding: Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, the "cakewalk" guy, I forgot his name, that other guy that's the "dumbest fucking guy on the planet", etc.
Has he ever explained where all the money went?
