China Denies Directing Radar at Japanese Military

HONG KONG — China on Friday denied guiding a radar capable of aiding weapon strikes at a Japanese naval vessel and helicopter near disputed islands, instead accusing Japan of fanning tensions, in the latest exchange to lay bare festering discord between the two countries.

The Chinese Ministry of Defense’s account of the two incidents stood bluntly at odds with one given on Tuesday by Japan’s Ministry of Defense, which said that on Jan. 30 a Chinese military vessel trained a radar used to help direct weapons on a Japanese naval destroyer near the islands in the East China Sea. Japan also said that a Chinese frigate directed the same kind of radar at one of its military helicopters on Jan. 19.

The Chinese defense ministry accompanied its denial with accusations that Japan was to blame for any unnervingly close encounters between their ships and aircraft in the East China Sea area.


Later on Friday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry also dismissed Japan’s assertions as “spun out of thin air,” and argued that they were intended to rekindle tensions. “We have no choice but to stay highly vigilant about Japan’s true intentions,” Hua Chunying, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, told reporters.

PRC is playing a high stake game with Japan now - if PRC are not more smart it might end up in a shooting match with a naval force who IS better equipped than they are.. I hope of course not for a shooting war between Japan and PRC.. But if it happened - I would bet on Japan instead of PRC.... The "defense forces" of Japan IS far better than anything the PRC have today..

And to "light up" a naval ship - with a radar who usually is used when they are aiming weapons onto another is if not a an act of war - at least treated as a rude treatment - and also something that definitely would have made me prepare for the worst if I had been on the ship who was "lighted up" that way... It is very provoking to do that... And dangerous - a game of chicken who can accelerate into something that would make one bad day going really bad...

3. Reckless move by China

This has to be seen as extremely dangerous and provocative by China. The Japanese ship in question might have felt compelled to defend itself. Neither country can really afford a war or confrontation over these small islands. They just aren't worth it. Look at statistics about China's trade share with Japan. Any conflict would also alienate the US, Australia, Taiwan and South Korea, effectively paralysing the Chinese economy and as well as proving detrimental to Japan's Pacific allies. Still, bad events still happen - look at the sinking of the Cheonan. The Chinese need to be careful, more provocations could lead to disaster.
