Reg Presley, lead singer of British 1960s rock band The Troggs, has died aged 71, a friend has said.
Presley, best known for hits including Wild Thing and Love Is All Around, had announced a year ago that he was battling cancer and would retire from the band.
Veteran music journalist Keith Altham, a close friend of Presleys, wrote on his Facebook page that the singer had died surrounded by family and friends on Monday at his home in Andover, southeast England.
My dear old pal Reg Presley of The Troggs died today, he wrote.

(2,252 posts)I was 13 or 14 when Wild Thing hit Billboard #1.
As performed by The Troggs, "Wild Thing" is ranked #257 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Hope Reg Presley (born Reginald Maurice Ball) gets to wear one of those suits again...maybe with wings.
Thanks for the post, AN. It was refreshing.

(42,714 posts)Chip Taylor wrote Wild Thing (as well as some other well known songs such as Angel of the Morning). His real name is James Voight and he is Jon Voight's brother and Angelian Jolie's uncle.

(6,261 posts)I had no idea! I vaguely recall one Chip Taylor having a hit with "That Same Old Story" in the '70s, but I had no idea he was so much more than that.

Yeah, I do feel old, I remember both versions.
RIP Reg Presley.

Everett McKinley Dirksen had cut a spoken word single called "Gallant Men."
So naturally this version featured the line, "Oh, you gallant Wild Thing..."

Good thing Beyonce wasn't with the group, or everybody would be complaining about the lip-synching.

(21,925 posts)and music critics have called them "the progenitors of punk". The Troggs tune "From Home" which was the flip side of "Wild Thing" (and a superior tune, in my opinion) was written by Reg Presley. I played this tune in my first band in the 60s and guitarists were copying Chris Britton's guitar solo. I've always thought "From Home" was their coolest and most Trogg-like tune and it's the tune the punk rock movement most admired.

(21,925 posts)And another fantastic tune that is very punk and where you can see the influence they had on later genres of music.
And still another hard-driving tune that foresaw the Ramones.
And another.
