California's Hispanic population projected to outnumber white in 2014
Source: Reuters
California's Hispanic population will equal that of whites this year before becoming the state's largest demographic group in 2014 for the first time since statehood in 1850, a government report showed on Thursday.
That change in the most populous U.S. state will make it the third where whites do not comprise a plurality of the population, after New Mexico and Hawaii.
The newly released report from the California Department of Finance, which regularly crunches demographic figures, says that whites comprised 40 percent of the state's population in 2010, with Hispanics at 38 percent.
The latest projections indicate the Hispanic population "will be even with the number of non-Hispanic whites by mid-2013," the Department of Finance said in a statement.

(5,023 posts)The second they saw the Hispanic population growing, I think they moved to the Chicago suburbs. People also left the city to the suburbs when they saw the African American population start to rise. I call them douche bags. Anyway, congrats Hispanics!

(16,191 posts)...is that all of the racist white douchebags have been fleeing California because the state has been getting a lot browner than they prefer. I've personally heard the whole "This state is going to implode...." speech from white neighbors as they fled north and east more than once, and it always includes some variation on the notion that hispanics are uncivilized and the increasing hispanic population means the end of California as we know it.
DaveJ is right. They are douchebags. And they have been fleeing for almost 20 years. The only pity I feel is for the people in their new homes who have to put up with their bigoted douchebaggery.

(5,023 posts)I'm not the best communicator. I knew that statement was fierce. But I see a lot of racial discrimination, and it is often by those who claim to be the least racists, and by those who accuse others of being racist. I don't think I insulted anyone in that statement except for douche bags. I was making an observation about the demographic shift, and the attitudes of many people (those are the assholes). I could analyze things. Here is an article mentioning that CA's population went down by 100,000:
http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Californias-Population-Moving-Out-182914961.html
It also states that over half the people who moved there, moved there from other countries. I'm gonna make a moronic guess that most those were Hispanic. Now I'm no mathmertician, but if the Hispanic population grew, and the population of the state went down, I'd say that the majority of the people leaving were white. Maybe I skipped a few steps in logic there, but I think it's a fair educated guess. Now is it just a coincidence white people are leaving CA? Are they leaving because they got tired of the wonderful weather? Maybe they love -4 degree temperatures that I'm experiencing now instead. Nah, I'm going to say, based on what I've heard them say, that they are white douche bags who can't live in a diverse social atmosphere. Some of them might even be hipsters. Some might be librarians or rocket scientists. But I'm just gonna call them douche bags.
In regard to race baiting, I'm the one who thinks the above scenario is ridiculous. I'm the one complaining about it. I think people should live where-ever suits them best. But their decision should not be based on the color of their neighbors. I'm upset about that. I could just ignore the problem, but I do not like to ignore problems. There are a lot of problems that people ignore. People often wonder why I'm even pointing them out, claiming that is just the way things are... why in the world are you even bringing it up?
Anyway, I'm excited about another ethic population gaining a foothold in the U.S. This is a great time in our history. We should all be enthusiastic about it.

(37,748 posts)The stats may look odd depending on where one lives...
Being from, and living in TX, the Hispanic growth is something I take as normal (my own city, Grand Prairie has an Hispanic population of over 50%). But seeing an Asian population close to 13.5% is far beyond our ken in TX-- without checking, I'd hazard that we may be 6 or 7% tops for our Asian populace. Also odd is the (to me) that the California black population seems incredibly tiny. I would have guessed somewhere in the 15%-25% range.
I suppose I had thought the CA's demographics would be about the same as TX.
Which is why it's a good thing I rarely guess...

(53,235 posts)I remember when race demos were only Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongloid. Now, I think, those are all banned words, but that doesn't change history. That's how I learned them in school. Back then, most Hispanics would have fallen under the caucasoid category.
Genetically, the categories don't mean shit. They're just political categories, just tools to pit 99%ers against 99%ers and steal the treasury for the 1%ers.

(60,567 posts)I've been taught all my life not to judge people or make assumptions about them based on the color of their skin or their national origin. I've been immersed in a population that has a large percentage of Hispanics since I was too young to remember otherwise. I have worked with people of different backgrounds and races since I entered the workforce in the early 1980s.
A lot of us really don't care, and never have.

(2,730 posts)to teach me the color of someone's skin didn't make you superior. I learned that when I began to learn everythingelse growing up. It is what you know upstairs and not because of your skin color. I've seen ignorant and intelligent people of all skin colors. Anybody with a brain can figure it out.

with our population race *should* not be an issue.
but i think it's a lot easier and more naive to say that race is not an issue in this state when a person has white experience to judge how racial minorities are treated here.

(333 posts)I always get annoyed by these articles about demographic shifts. Hispanic people can be of any race and come in all shades, yet they always like to group it together with actual racial groups. For example, whenever discussing voter ID laws and such, they always lump it together with African-Americans, even though Hispanic is cultural and not biological. And another thing is that they keep saying that whites will soon become the minority in California, but that isn't exactly true; it's just the NON-HISPANIC whites who will be in the minority. Hispanic and non-Hispanic whites will still be the overwhelming majority of our population here.
