White House: Obama Would “Object” To Annihilating GOP

Source: BuzzFeed

A deep respect for the two-party system, says Carney.

Zeke Miller
BuzzFeed Staff

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney shot down reports that President Barack Obama is set on annihilating the Republican Party. Speaker of the House John Boehner accused Obama of just that in a speech Tuesday to The Ripon Society.

Carney assured reporters in an off-camera press gaggle that destroying the GOP is not his goal, adding that Obama has respect for the nation's two-party system.

Q John Boehner -- Speaker Boehner was quoted saying that "the President's goal is to annihilate the Republican Party." What's the President's reaction to that?

MR. CARNEY: Well, I haven't spoken to the President about that, but I know it's not his goal. His goal is to work together with Congress, with members of both parties to achieve progress on behalf of the American people. You heard him say in the inaugural address that even though we have profound differences and differences that we will not resolve necessarily in the next year or two or three or four, it is imperative that we come together and act on behalf of the American people. And there are things that we can and must do together.

The President believes that a strong two-party system is the foundation of our democracy and looks forward to working with Republicans as well as Democrats to get things done.

Q He wouldn't object to the annihilation of the Republican Party, would he? (Laughter.)

After all, he's to the right of where Nixon and Reagan governed from. He's bent over backwards to appease the Republicans. Why would he want to annihilate them?

The Ds would simply become two parties: centrists and progressives.

I want to see the Regressive Party die so that the Democratic Party can do its inevitable split into Slow Progress & Fast Progress.
Centrist & Progressive.

It's time to finish them off in 2014 mid-terms & exterminate this party from the national platform for good in 2016 then 2020.
Turning Texas over to a solid Democratic state is the key.
Then slowly but surely we can kill the Republican Party in the Regional stages obliterating every remnant of that ignorant force.

Meanwhile we'll clean up the dead weight in the Democratic Party & get some thoughtful action done at LAST.
I would rather deal with a Centrist than an outright Regressive.
I can work with a Centrist at least.

And don't let Chris Christie fool you.
He's the same fool for the Republicans he always was.
His going off-script is to help him become a good 2016 candidate & nothing more.

We're not going anywhere really until the Republican Party & the Conservative Movement is dead & gone from political discussion.

As long as the two parties are the Dems and the Greens, with the repukes banned like the Nazi party is in Germany.

At that point, I become an independent swing voter.

He's the POTUS, and they just want to sell the US off to the highest bidder. Classic GOP projection onto others. Another fail. BTW, if the GOP is eliminated

And the President doesn't really have to do a thing about it. The GOP are really in the middle of a circular firing squad. Better off the GOP splits into two different parties - the crazy side and the sane side. Unfortunately the sane side would be of Third Party status but at least they would be incumbents...

When they annihilate their own party, it sure won't be Obama's fault.
