House Democrats Revive Health Care Public Option To Reduce Deficit
Source: Talking Points Memo
The public option is back
sort of.
House Democrats on Tuesday introduced the Public Option Deficit Reduction Act, which would provide consumers the choice to opt into a government-run health insurance plan in the Obamacare exchanges.
The bill, which almost certainly cannot pass in the Republican-controlled House, is a mostly symbolic effort meant to keep the public option alive as a policy prescription. It is sponsored by Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), who is on the Energy & Commerce health subcommittee, along with Energy & Commerce Ranking Member Henry Waxman (D-CA) and 43 other lawmakers.
The Public Option Deficit Reduction Act will give health care consumers more choice and lower their premiums, said Schakowsky. And, by providing a lower-cost alternative to private insurance, it would put pressure on all insurers to lower their premiums in order to compete.

(14,255 posts)I was afraid there was going to be complacency about this sort of thing - but I want to see unrelenting pressure to make single payer be the logical outcome of the ACA because, as it stands, care ain't affordable, no matter if the government is picking up the tab or not.
Just because Obama doesn't have the ability to propose single payer (or so I have been told) that doesn't mean we should all sit quietly and praise the half a pony we got.

(15,438 posts)For the DUers who haven't seen my many posts here regarding the public option that was buried within ObamaCare, here is an October 2012 NYT's article that reported that the Obama Admin has been quietly working at putting together two U.S. supported health care insurances three months before the election. Of course, had President Obama not won, this would have been moot.
But he has won, and thus we'll be getting a (according to the Heritage Foundation) "robust public option that liberals always wanted."

Texas governor has refused to set up Obamacare. Perhaps the birthplace of the single payer
system, instead of federal copay money to insurance companies, could be in Texas.

(5,610 posts)when these insurers get a large increase in the pool of people they are insuring, they must lower premiums to reflect this increase.
The law about spending a certain percentage on actual medical care (for the insurers) doesn't address the continued gouging of Americans paying increasingly large premiums. These health insurance companies according to current law, are obligated to maximize profits for their share holders...

(31,849 posts)So all those States that refused to set up/operate their exchanges would, if this measure passes, get the P/O!
I wonder ... why would legislation be necessary? Yes, it would require all states to offer it; but wouldn't the better approach be to include the P/O in the exchanges that the Federal Government sets up and runs? It could be done through the regulatory/administrative powers, already vested in the federal executive branch.

But there are enough decent people to make sure this common-sense, good-government, good health care, and economically prudent step is taken.

A nation which pays private individuals to profit from the health care of its citizens will always and forever be weaker than one who funds it as a needed public investment.

(10,597 posts)Yeah, it won't pass, but it will keep some common sense in the air. Frankly, if the Republicans hang themselves in the next couple years and get there arrses kicked out of Congress, and we are at the helm once again in 2014, I say go all the way. Medicare for all. Period. Boy, wouldn't that burn the powers that be! I'm doing the Snoopy Dance just thinking about it. Cheers to Schakowsky and Waxman!
