Oregon charter school founders accused in $20 million racketeering lawsuit

Source: Betsy Hammond, The Oregonian

Tim King and Norm Donohoe, who ran a chain of taxpayer-funded charter schools across small-town Oregon from their headquarters in Clackamas, scammed the state out of $17 million and must repay that plus $2.7 million more, the state said in a court filing this week.

The legal claim, brought Thursday by the Oregon Department of Justice in Marion County Circuit Court, accuses the pair of racketeering, money laundering and other fraud from 2007 to 2010.

King and Donohoe, who were the director and president, respectively, of a nonprofit they named EdChoices, submitted false, incomplete and misleading records about how many students were enrolled in the schools and how they were spending the state's money, state prosecutors say in the complaint.

This is scandalous, and a good example of what happens when public dollars are transfered to the private sector without the same kind of scrutiny people give government budgets. Oh the things $20 million could have purchased for the benefit of Oregon public school students. What do you think the money could have been spent on that would actually improve public schools?

How many times have we seen similar reports? I'm sure many Republicans would love to start up charter school franchises partially financed by the government. Get a few of those babies going and our education system would collapse. It's almost there now.

of services. Not to mention, the charter schools are not subject to the same oversight and regulation and can be Christian madrasas for brainwashing children.

Problem with that is manipulation of the test results, which some have been caught doing in order to qualify for funding to stay open.

Plus, charter schools don't have to accept everyone, which public schools must do.

It's very popular among RepubliCONS. But private enterprises always cost much, much more than if the service were run by a government agency.

all starters of charters are either malcontents or rip off artists...and those who send their children to them are either duped or looking for lower taxes. On a corrollary note, I had to laugh when the liquor privitization was voted on in Washington State..all these cheap fuckers who wan't less expensive alcohol were in for a rude shock...the prices went UP! SO in schools, the price will go up and the quality down when you privatize..the minute you make something a business, then it becomes a goal of that entity to part you from your money and nothing less than that!!!!

The harvesting of public assets will continue in Chicago, but it will all be honestly done.

We know that this is true because Arne Duncan (D-Sec of Ed) previously served as CEO of the Chicago Public School system and wouldn't let this happen.

I hope they get stripped of every last nickel with my local share of the tax proceeds being rightfully returned to our public school district.

The public is gradually catching on to the fact charter schools are just a way to siphon tax dollars into the private sector but it's slow going. Unfortunately we'll have to see many more cases like this one before joe six pack has an epiphany.
