Woman Is Held in Death of Man Pushed Onto Subway Tracks in Queens

Source: New York Times

A 31-year-old woman was being held by the police on Saturday in connection with the death of a man who was pushed onto the tracks of a Queens subway station and crushed by an oncoming train.

The woman, who had not yet been charged with a crime and whose identity was not revealed, made statements implicating herself in the crime when questioned by detectives, according to Paul J. Browne, the chief spokesman for the Police Department.

Patrol officers picked up the woman early Saturday after someone who had seen a video of a woman running from the attack spotted her on a Brooklyn street and called 911, Mr. Browne said.

The attack occurred around 8 p.m. on Thursday at the 40th Street-Lowery Street station in Sunnyside.

unless she confesses. If she's mentally ill, then there'll be questions about her competence to make a statement.

No physical evidence, only eyewitnesses to ID her, and a grainy surveillance recording. A good defense attorney could make the case it's mistaken identity.

But it's going to be hard to prove they've got the right suspect.

I agree with you. No one, whether they are in good mental health or not, has a right to push another human being into the path of a train - or to push another onto train tracks. This person should be put away for good because they do not have a right, nor do they deserve, to live among other civilized persons.

Some people should be punished for their negative, repulsive behavior and this is one of these people!

who will determine whether or not she is competent to stand trial. If she is found not to be competent to stand trial, she will be sent to a state mental facility where she will under go "competency training." When she is able to recite back all the answers (whether she is able to actually understand them) required for a rating of competent to stand trial, she will then stand trial.

they were mistaken for Muslim by Islamophobes? Indians didn't bring down the World Trade Center and neither did all Muslims. I seem to remember that, not counting the terrorists, 70 Muslims died on 9/11 in the attacks. You're right; Fox News and the right wing echo chamber program these idiots with their propaganda and hateful rhetoric, then let them loose in the streets to perform their holy missions.

Woman charged with hate-crime murder over Queens subway death

Police say Erica Menendez made statements implicating herself in death of Sunando Sen, who was pushed in front of train

Associated Press in New York
guardian.co.uk, Saturday 29 December 2012 18.02 EST

A woman accused of pushing an immigrant from India to his death in front of a subway train was charged on Saturday with murder as a hate crime.

Police arrested Erica Menendez on Saturday after a passer-by on a street noticed she resembled the woman seen in a surveillance video.

A spokeswoman for Queens district attorney Richard A Brown said Menendez told authorities she hates Hindus and Muslims.

Subway shoving victim Sunando Sen was from India, but it's unclear if he was Muslim or Hindu.

Sen, who lived in the borough of Queens and ran a printing shop, was killed on Thursday night. Witnesses said a muttering woman pushed him on the tracks as a No. 7 train entered a Queens station and then ran off.
