Philippines contraception law signed by Benigno Aquino

Source: BBC

Philippines President Benigno Aquino has signed into law a bill providing for free access to contraception and family planning.

Supporters say the law, which took 14 years to pass, will reduce poverty and maternal mortality in a country with the highest birth rate in the region.

The Roman Catholic Church repeatedly tried to block the bill.

Parliament failed to pass the measure several times before approving a final version on 19 December.

their failure to change to today's world and to recognize the rights of women.

Under Pope John XXIII, in the 1960's, I really thought things would change. But they haven't. And over the last few decades, they've become more intransigent and more ossified.

I would love to be able to practice the Catholic religion as I understand it, but today's Church isn't anything like what I thought Catholicism was.
