WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) A 24-year-old woman was arrested Friday and charged in connection with the Christmas Eve ambush slaying of two volunteer firefighters responding to a house fire in upstate New York.
Dawn Nguyen of Rochester faces a state charge of filing a falsified business record, State Police Senior Investigator James Sewell said. Nguyen also faces a federal charge; a news conference with the U.S. attorney in western New York was scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday.
Sewell said the state charge is connected to the purchase of an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun that William Spengler had with him Monday when firefighters Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were gunned down. Three other people were wounded before the 62-year-old Spengler killed himself. He also had a .38-caliber revolver, but Nguyen is not connected to that gun, Sewell said.
The .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle, which had a combat-style flash suppressor, is similar to the one used by the gunman who massacred 20 children and six women in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school earlier this month.

(26,366 posts)Palmiere said the charges are related to the .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle and a Mossberg 12-guage shotgun,
not the handgun that was also in Spengler's possession. He said Nguyen doesn't recall whether she reported the guns stolen.

Seems she was a bit chatty & knew about some of the guns.
You have guns allegedly stolen but never report it...

(I'm saying this as an Asian-American born in central NY and now living in northern CA.)

(26,366 posts)It is sometimes referred to acting as a straw purchaser and that is exactly what todays complaint alleges, Hochul said.
Police say Spengler went with Nguyen to Gander Mountain and picked out the weapons himself. During an interview late on Christmas Eve, she told police she had bought the guns for personal protection and that they were stolen from her vehicle, though she never reported the guns stolen.
The day after the shootings, Nguyen texted an off-duty Monroe County Sheriffs deputy with references to the killings. She later called the deputy and admitted she bought the guns for Spengler, police said Friday.

(36,437 posts)And that the guns they're selling go directly to illicit activities, if not outright murder, as here. It's a massive joke in Indiana, where straw purchases are rampant for the drug gangs in Chicago, and all these upright "responsible" gun store owners get rich on the misery of the South and West Sides.
Then the gun nuts have the fucking nerve to point at Chicago's gun crimes where "guns are banned" hardy har har. Crack down on the legal-to-illicit pipeline in Indiana and you'll see Chicago gun crimes reduced to nothing.

(24,128 posts)It wouldn't be likely that law enforcement would trace the path of a firearm until after a crime has been committed (as in this case).
But there must be a way. This particular woman should be given the harshest penalty possible. They should make an example of her.

(37,451 posts)straw purchases made from 10 states using nonexistant address's others are just stolen. In fact 625 guns have been report stolen in the tri-county area since 2009.
The Feds tracked a quantity of these gun to several locations nationwide.
