California governor’s office tries to get Fox News to correct ‘shocking mistake’

Source: Jim Romenesko

FoxNews.com reported last week that California’s 2012 budget deficit is projected to hit $28 billion.

“Completely false,” writes Gil Duran, Gov. Jerry Brown’s press secretary. “The error was actually pointed out to me by a reporter who thought it was a pretty shocking mistake.”

Duran tells Romenesko readers:

I wrote a request for a correction. Ignored.Unknown So it appears I’m going to have to campaign for a correction. Most news outlets are more than happy to correct an egregious error. Not Fox News, apparently. I’m not surprised by most of what they do. But — come on — you can’t just write fiction. I’m used to their relentless attacks and we generally ignore them … falsehoods are another matter!

Because Fox doesn't provide contact info they are not informed of press announcements at the WH.

I was attempting to make a point about how ridiculous the press secretary's news release was. The point was to discredit Faux News, not to get out the correct information. They don't want any stories reminding people about their budget deficit. (my posts here are from a news standpoint, not a political standpoint)

"Fox news apologizes for the error -- but how about telling us the real number, then, huh, Governor?" That's all they'd have to say -- and they would if they had a scintilla of integrity, which (of course) they don't.

Call a press conference and correct the "error" to the press at large, then call on the Fox reporter, NOT to take a question, but to ask HIM as to why his network is so unresponsive in correcting an egregious error.

The court held that it's perfectly legal for Fux News to lie through their teeth. Unfettered by any legal penalties, with a political agenda to promote, a public with a virtually nonexistent memory, and an incredibly gullible viewership, why on earth would they concern themselves with pesky things like facts?

if I'm reading this correctly.

The State ended the last fiscal year with a cash deficit of $9.6 billion. As of November 30, that cash deficit totaled $24.9 billion and is being covered with $14.9 billion of internal borrowing (temporary loans from special funds), and $10 billion of external borrowing.

http://www.democracyforums.com/showthread.php?p=1219981

Looks like they made the common error of confusing deficits with accumulated debt.

Free speech does not have to allow lying.

There are many threads that all say the rule of law is disintegrating. IMHO that's because 'Integrity' has become a dirty word, just as willful ignorance seems to have become a virtue.

We need to demand better. Racing to the bottom is not something I support.
