Biden Swears in Schatz as Hawaii's New Senator.

Source: nyt/ap

Brian Schatz is Hawaii's new senator after a swearing-in ceremony Thursday led by Vice President Joe Biden.

The 40-year-old Democrat succeeds Daniel Inouye (ih-NOH'-way), who died last week at age 88.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie chose Schatz to fill the vacancy. Schatz had been Hawaii's lieutenant governor.

Schatz gently took the hand of his fellow senator Daniel Akaka (uh-KAH'-kuh) and helped him walk up the Senate chamber's center aisle to meet Biden. Akaka is retiring at age 88.

who must have figured the Senate seat was hers after it was made known that Sen. Inouye had expressed his wish for her appointment on his deathbed. She must be steaming.

just like he did when I used to visit his office in the state House years ago. Yes, he was in the state House in his 20s.

Also, he got a ride to DC with a fellow grad of elite high school Punahou -- "Barry" Obama. The old school tie could help make up for his lack of seniority.
