'Pink slime' lawsuit for Jamie Oliver, ABC and blogger

Source: BBC

12 December 2012 Last updated at 22:46 GMT

A worker laid off by a US beef processing company has sued celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, a food blogger and ABC News, saying their use of the term "pink slime" helped him lose his job.

Bruce Smith, 58, was one of about 750 people fired by Beef Products Inc, maker of lean finely textured beef.

He is seeking $70,000 (£43,000) in damages, saying the company and workers were "maligned" by the "unfair" phrase.

The firm closed three plants and fired workers at its South Dakota office.

I am sick and tired of the contamination of our food supply. People are getting sicker and I don't think it is a coincidence that I started to get better after I stopped eating meat. I am pretty sure growth hormones and second hand antibiotics are not things we should be ingesting. And as I type there are companies that are spending millions to keep the truth off of food labels.

And what it actually was was scraps of beef fat which had fallen on the floor or were otherwise inedible being ground up, sanitized with ammonia, heated to remove some fat and pureed into a pink slime, the mixed with actual ground beef to hide it.

I could call hamburger pink slime, but people wouldn't stop buying it because they know it's not ammonia laced fat scraps.

guilty for not exposing the truth about that garbage himself. Suing because the consumer found out that the industry he worked for was passing off crap as food is nuts.

was probably a decent job in South Dakota. The product was awful, but they had buyers--I blame the buyers most of all.
