Senate OKs bill tightening rules on Michigan abortion clinics

A bill that may limit abortion options in Michigan has passed the state Senate on a 27-10 vote, strengthening restrictions on clinics.

The Senate made minor changes to the bill, so it has to go back to the full House for concurrence, which is expected to happen this week. The vote was primarily along party lines, with Sen. Tupac Hunter, D-Detroit, and John Gleason, D-Flushing, joining most Republicans in supporting it. Sen. Roger Kahn, R-Saginaw Twp., a doctor, did not vote on the bill.

The bill:

• Requires abortion clinics to be licensed and adhere to the same standards and regulations as free-standing surgical clinics. • Dictates how to dispose of fetal remains. • Prohibits a doctor from performing an abortion until determining that the woman hasn’t been coerced into undergoing the procedure.

No decision has been made on when the House will hold its vote to concur with the Senate version of the bill, said Ari Adler, a spokesman for House Speaker Jase Bolger, R-Marshall. . .

2. And then there is this: Bill Allowing Concealed Weapons In Schools Approved By House Committee

A bill approved by a House committee Wednesday would allow gun owners with concealed weapons to carry those weapons in schools and other formerly “gun-free” zones.

David Eggert from MLive has more:

Michigan now prohibits people licensed for concealed weapons from carrying them in schools, day care centers, sports arenas, bars, places of worship, hospitals, dorms and casinos. They can, however, openly carry their guns in schools and all other places except federal buildings, courthouses and casinos.

The bill would let CPL holders apply for an exemption so they could carry concealed guns in those gun-free zones, though they no longer could openly carry there under the legislation. They would have to get at least eight more hours of training and fire 94 additional rounds at a firing range.

However, private property owners—churches, bars, hospitals and others—would be allowed to prohibit guns from being carried on their premises. Because of their autonomy under the state constitution, public universities also could ban guns.

Detroit, MI --(Ammoland.com)- The state of Michigan may soon abolish handgun registrations and handgun purchase permits.

Michigan House Bill 5225 (HB 5225) – the legislation which seeks to abolish the aforementioned pistol reporting requirements – has already been passed by the Michigan House of Representatives and is expected to be put up for a vote within the next few days in the Michigan Senate.

At least with respect to handgun registrations, the state of Michigan is very late to the gun rights party; it is one of a small remaining number of US states that still require them: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, and New Jersey.

7. My home state has gone crazy.

The De Vos and Prince families have been enough on their own, but now they're pulling in the Koch brothers.

Left to their own devices and without 24/7 Koch ads, I can't believe that everyone left is that nuts.

I have been looking forward to spending at least a good amount of time in Western Michigan, near the Big Lake, but I don't want to be surrounded by complete lunatics for long stretches of time.

There are other expatriot Michiganders around this board who think the same way, I think.
