SIR Paul McCartney will front a Nirvana reunion tonight — replacing late singer Kurt Cobain.
Source: The Sun (I know, I know)
The sensational gig will see the surviving members of the grunge band together for the first time in 20 years.
And former Beatle Sir Paul will sing with them as they play a new song at a star-filled charity concert in New York.
...
Sir Paul said he rang Dave, 43, who asked him to come along to jam with some mates. Macca had suggested they just make something up and found himself playing with Grohl on drums, bassist Krist, 47, and unofficial fourth Nirvana member Pat Smear, 53.
He said: I didnt really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said Whoa? You guys havent played together for all that time?' And somebody whispered to me Thats Nirvana. Youre Kurt. I couldnt believe it.

This concert will be awesome, and I hope it helps out the families that are still without basic needs after Sandy. Plus, I have to see this...

We don't need some music group seeking some publicity to sell some albums or get themselves more publicity to steal the show.

(56,582 posts)I'm trying to find a way to reasonably get annoyed by this story and I can't. A very great band is reuniting, fronted by a former member of another very great band to help out people who lost everything when a hurricane hit. This is puppies holding an American flag stuff.

(1,869 posts)for you to start a reply to my comment by saying "who pissed in your cornflakes". It's rude and it doesn't push forward productive discussion.
These performers are "working" for free today. But that doesn't mean we should bow down and salute them for a clear attention-grabbing move like this particular group is doing. This should be an event where the families who were devastated by Sandy get center stage. Countless people still need help. The performers should just perform their acts and get off stage. We don't need these "performers" pushing forward a publicity stunt to sell more albums or get more publicity. Save these "exciting!" revelations for the group's own tour. While I see we have many of this particular group's biggest fans on this forum, I can assure you that many of those in Sandy's direct line of damage (me included) could care less about which particular music group is "getting back together".
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)Do you suggest they run a static message 'Sandy victims need money' on the screen, with an 800 number to call, no performers, no show of any kind? People should just give? Cute idea.
But I don't think those in need of help are really thinking about how the funds are raised. If I lived there, I'd be impressed at such a mixed legend line up working for my benefit.
Plus I love that you think Nirvana and the Beatles are still touring and making new albums. Priceless, really.

(1,869 posts)many charities have been doing exactly what you have said for a month now and have raised plenty of money. I guess some of us will donate to a cause we feel strong about without the need to hear a fancy guitar solo or a band reunion. Some of us will donate for the good of the cause, rather than to hear their own favorite performers.
Irregardless of the fact that they aren't touring or creating new albums - many of the members (those who are still alive) and record labels are still profiting monetarily from already-released albums. And while they are "working" for free tonight, they stand to benefit monetarily in the future from such publicity stunts.
Leave the publicity stunts to the front-page of the Rolling Stones. This event should belong to the families of Sandy victims only.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)of course. Springsteen, Alicia Keyes, Billy Joel, Kanye West, The Who, Eric Clapton, Bon Jovi are all performing.
Because of the amazing line up, this show will be seen and money raised world wide, 200 TV stations outside the US. It will be shown live in theaters, streamed on the internet. Potential audience-2 Billion Donors.
Aside from all that, I just don't get why you are not harping on say, Alicia Keys who does bloody credit card commercials and all sorts of touring and is in the midst of a career that does involve still wanting to sell some units. I mean, do you really think the families harmed by the storm should get up on stage and beg for it? Or that nothing should be done?
And sure, 'some of us' will simply donate. That's what I meant by self righteous. But others will react to a show like this with huge donations. Others, who are of course not nearly as good as you or me....

(30,813 posts)I think it is great they are doing a fundraiser. I would say their motives are to help people out and maybe to have a good time with old buddies. Clearly they are not doing it for career boosting.
It's hysterical that Paul didn't know about Nirvana.

(26,060 posts)The concert was amazing - these artists did it for free...for their neighbors. Who gives a shit how much attention they're getting for it? The more attention, the more money will be raised. Everybody wins. I love when that happens.

I don't know the ins-and-outs of Nirvana's history because I'm not an entitled internet poster who reams others for not knowing the history of a band. I've got other stuff to worry about, like, you know, putting food on the table.

(34,825 posts)yeh, Nirvana is the "center of my life." whatever you say, slappy. and buy a fucking dictionary while you're out worrying about other stuff. it doesn't help your argument when you use non-existent words.

(1,869 posts)I'm not impressed by your constant expletives. Or your ability to play part in the grammar and spelling police. They certainly don't enhance your argument. In fact, they make you look foolish, like an entitled middle-aged white guy who has never had to worry about putting food on the table. This is a publicity stunt, and those who are not blinded by these performer's histories see it for what it is. I'm sorry I'm not fluent in the history of Nirvana and the Beatles. That is a uniquely white middle-class baby boomer phenomenon.

(1,869 posts)I offered my opinion, which was substantially different from yours. I admittedly do not know the front-to-back page histories of either of these groups, nor do I care to learn about them. However, you are the one who has elevated the hostilities in this thread through your constant tough-guy internet talk that is loaded with expletives. I have lived through Sandy. I live in Ocean County, NJ, which received the brunt of Sandy's damage. For a musical performer to use this event as a publicity stunt annoys me personally. The fact that I do not know the minute details of Nirvana's career is irrelevant here. This is not a time for gimmicks, publicity stunts or attention-seeking. Get on stage, perform, get off stage. This is not the time for a reunion. Or a makeshift reunion. Or whatever the heck you want to call it. If more than a single second is spent on "McCartney partnering with Nirvana" in place of the plight of Sandy victims, it's an abject tragedy.

and therefore Sandy victims get help. It's how our modern society works. They're just people doing whatever they can do, which, in their case, is be famous, and donate money and time.
