The fact-checkers at Politifact on Wednesday named Mitt Romney's campaign ad claiming Jeep planned to ship production overseas to China the "lie of the year."

3. Welfare Ad Worse

The welfare ad put out by the Romney campaign was worse. The auto industry bailout had been discussed on numerous occasions. Most people knew that President Obama had bailed out the American auto industry and Mitt Romney had opposed that idea. If after being bailed out Jeep actually decided to move some or all of its manufacturing to China, so what. President Obama did not have a say in the decisions made by Jeep. In addition, Mitt Romney had, in the past, been a supporter of moving American jobs to China. The Jeep ad made Romney look at the least like a flip flopper.

The welfare ad, on the other hand, dealt with a subject that had not been discussed much in the press. It is possible that until the Romney campaign put out an ad about the subject most people had not heard about the issue in connection to President Obama. It was not as well known what President Obama had done on the subject of welfare reform. It could also be argued that ending the work portion of welfare reform would have been much more unpopular than Jeep moving manufacturing to China. In addition, unlike the Jeep issue President Obama had to ability to affect a decision. The point of the ad was to make it seem like President Obama wanted more people to rely on government services instead of work.
