Alaska lawmaker plans renewed push for voter photo ID law here

Source: Anchorage Daily News

In an early sign of Republican muscle-flexing in the reordered Alaska Legislature, an Anchorage House member says he plans to revive a dormant bill to require Alaskans to show a photo ID to vote.

"It'll be one of the first bills we hear," said Rep. Bob Lynn, R-Anchorage, the chairman of the House State Affairs Committee.

... In Alaska, where photo-bearing licenses aren't even necessary to drive in 294 villages, towns and communities off the highway system, such a requirement could affect thousands of voters.

"That's going to be depriving a lot of people from the opportunity to vote," said Myron Naneng, president of the Association of Village Council Presidents in Bethel. "For the state to say that they require an ID in order to allow people to vote, that's a bunch of BS -- strictly BS."

Regarding muscle flexing, the Executive Branch is some hefty muscle when flexed! Senate too!
Take no prisoners should be the attitude when Supreme Court appointments come up.

Regarding IDs, in the alternative, how about if people get to know their neighbors

They proposed putting ID machines in all the villages, but it was too costly. Going around to all the villages individually is too costly and would take a year or more to finish.

So the plan is to put the burden on the villagers themselves.

tug and barge supplying outlying coastal villages and can attest to the foolishness of A-passing such a law or rule and B-attempting to implement such a law or rule. This is CLEARLY the Republicans acting like big fat elephants with the brain removed!

Only way in is by float plane in the summer and dog sled or snow machine in the winter.

Most of the people in the village had no ID and no birth certificate. Half of them didn't know their exact birth date because the elders keeping records had died and didn't write them down.

This has to do with being able to crush any attempt to stop the Governor from implementing his TWO BILLION dollar a year give away to the oil corporations. It is a very unpopular bill and it would most likely have to be put to a vote.

This is also the beginning salvos for the 2014 elections. The Governor and a handful of other filth are gunning for Sen. Begich's seat and they are lining up every possible way to disenfranchise any other voter then their base.

The fact that Bob Lynn is doing this just makes it that much more transparent. They don't call him, "head nod Bob" for nothing. I think the guy sleeps more while the Legislature is in session then when he is home.

Anyways, he is in a very safe republican seat (read racist) and the need for him to think this is necessary is a joke since the only person ever caught illegally voting was a cop. But the real reason is that the trend is for rural Natives is to vote Democratic.

Sorry about the rambling, coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

This is NOT a popular idea here, especially with so much of our Native population not having driver's licenses nor even a DMV anywhere near. They would have to fly to a hub town to get this ID. Totally stupid law that probably has no chance of passing here even with the R majority.

how does he propose getting identification to those that don't even have bridges to nowhere..

They must be afraid that POTUS almost stole the election.

They are willing to pay $10,000000 in 1867 dollars. That's a 2.8 million dollar profit. I say let's take it.
