NEW ORLEANS (AP) State police resumed moving millions of pounds of explosives Monday that had been haphazardly stashed in warehouses in Louisiana, prompting hundreds to evacuate from harm's way in case any of it exploded.
The transfer of 6 million pounds of artillery propellant began again at daybreak at Camp Minden, which is in north Louisiana's Webster Parish. It started Saturday. A state police spokesman said the work is suspended at night.
About half the 800 residents in nearby Doyline, about 40 miles south of the Arkansas line, heeded state police warnings to evacuate until the stash could be divided into smaller quantities. Authorities were dividing the explosives into amounts that would be too small to pose a serious threat to the town if it were to ignite; there was enough ammunition to pack dozens of tractor-trailers.
The material was stored on property leased by Explo Systems Inc., which became the subject of a criminal investigation following an explosion in October.

(16,191 posts)Yeah yeah, I know that an actual kiloton is measured by number of joules released in the detonation, but since when has the media been concerned with the fine details when it comes to science? A thousand is a kilo. There are three thousand tons. Ergo, 3 kilotons is close enough for the 6 oclock news!

... Dozens of Explo workers in September filed suit in the U.S. District Courts Western Division in Shreveport alleging violations of the federal Fair Labor Labor Standards Act. The employees allege they have not receive wages or overtime pay for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours a week.
In addition to the wages they say they are due, the plaintiffs also seek liquidated damages, attorneys fees and litigation costs, including expert witness fees and expenses.
In one of the lawsuits, plaintiffs Kenny Shope, Steven Shoup, Patrick Simpson, Casimir Smith, Charlariet White and Anthony Williams say they are employed in the demilling process and are scheduled to work four days on and four days off at 12 hours a day. Since their job puts them in contact with explosives, they are required to wear protective clothing and safety gear.
At the end of their shifts, each must take off the protective clothing and gear, place the items in a laundry bag for washing then shower. The process takes about 30 minutes and the employees say they are not compensated for the extra time, nor are they paid to show up prior to the beginning of their shift to don their work clothes and get to their work stations ...
