Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene files motion to oust Mike Johnson as House speaker
Source: NBC
WASHINGTON Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has filed a motion to oust Speaker Mike Johnson, three sources with knowledge of the move told NBC News, doing so just as the House voted to avoid a government shutdown.
Johnson, R-La., has served as speaker for five months, having taken over for Kevin McCarthy who was ousted from the top job under a similar process.
It was not immediately clear how the House would act on her motion, which requires just a majority vote to remove the speaker. Greene, R-Ga., did not file the motion as privileged which would force a vote within two legislative days but instead as a regular motion, which could be referred to a committee where it would likely languish.
The House is set to leave for a two-week recess on Friday and won't consider the motion until after it returns, an official familiar with the process told NBC News.

(7,850 posts)I find great comfort in knowing the House cretins hate each other almost as much as they hate Dems...and as long they're consumed with once again disemboweling one of their own, Biden's faux impeachment is on hold...I will say this...they never promised to govern if they took the House in 2022 but they did promise never-ending bogus revenge hearings.. and they've more than delivered on that promise...
anyone taking bets on the Dems saving MAGA Mike's ass?

Great political move, Marge! Create Congressional chaos 7 months before the elections. Lets see how voters react.
Mike Johnson is an idiot but he seems head and shoulders above this dumb ass.

-snip-
Johnson was elected speaker after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was ousted by a far-right group led by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. But Gaetz said he would not support Greenes motion.
If we vacated this speaker, wed end up with a Democrat. When I vacated the last one, I made a promise to the country that we would not end up with the Democrat speaker. And I was right. I couldnt make that promise again, he told reporters.
Wed have Republicans cross over. I worry that weve got Republicans who would vote for Hakeem Jeffries at this point, he added. I really do. I take no joy in saying that. But you can only vacate the speaker if you know that the party leadership wont change hands. I knew that with certainty last time. I dont know it with certainty this time.

This Republican civil war is getting ugly fast...
"Its not only idiotic, but it actually does not do anything to advance the conservative movement. And in fact, it undermines the country, and our majority," said Republican Representative Mike Lawler, a so-called "moderate" who might lose his seat in New York next election.
Far-right Representative Clay Higgins said Greene's push to remove Johnson risked losing the only leader capable of leading them "through these very dark and challenging times.
I consider Marjorie Taylor Greene to be my friend. Shes still my friend. But she just made a big mistake," Higgins wrote on Twitter (X). "To think that one of our Republican colleagues would call for his ouster right now its really, its abhorrent to me and I oppose it."
Green claims that her motion to vacate stems from his anger over the $1.2 trillion spending bill that the Republican-controlled house just passed, but as usually the likeliest explanation is that she wants attention.

That of lifting the GOP out of the self created swamp it lives in.
But keep swapping speakers, soon you will find the miracle working saviour of your party.
Or not.

Im not saying that it wont happen in two weeks or it wont happen in a month or who knows when," Greene told reporters. "But I am saying the clock has started. Its time for our conference to choose a new speaker."
As for whether Johnson might ultimately meet McCarthys fate, theres an enormous amount of uncertainty. Given the tiny GOP majority in the chamber, if Democrats were to vote against Johnson, as they did with McCarthy, it would only take a small handful of Republicans to kick the House speaker out of his office.
Its not difficult to imagine those votes materializing especially given the ferocity of the House Freedom Caucus criticisms of Johnson but whether Democrats intend go along with such an effort remains an open question.
While the fight takes shape, lets not miss the forest for the trees. Resignations in the GOP-led chamber have reached a generational high. Legislative progress has slowed to a pace unseen in nearly a century. Lawmakers are struggling mightily to complete basic tasks. Johnson organized a retreat focused on unifying his conference, and most of his members didnt show up. A recent Punchbowl News report concluded, This is the most chaotic, inefficient and ineffective majority weve seen in decades covering Congress.
Its against this backdrop that one of the Houses most notorious extremists has launched an effort to oust her partys speaker six months after other radical GOP members successfully ousted his predecessor.
I wrote a book a few years ago about Republicans abandoning their role as a governing party. Its good to see so many GOP officials take steps to prove the thesis true.
