All 6 officers from Mississippi "Goon Squad" have been sentenced to prison for torturing 2 Black men

Source: CBS News

Sentencing has concluded for the six white former officers in Mississippi who pleaded guilty to breaking into a home without a warrant and torturing two Black men.

High-ranking Former deputy Brett McAlpin, 53, was the fifth former law enforcement officer sentenced this week by U.S. District Judge Tom Lee after pleading guilty to the attack, which involved beatings, repeated uses of stun guns and assaults with a sex toy before one of the victims was shot in the mouth. The final member of the group, 32-year-old former Richland police officer Joshua Hartfield, was given a sentence of about 10 years on Thursday afternoon.

Before his sentencing, McAlpin apologized to victims Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker.

"This was all wrong, very wrong. It's not how people should treat each other and even more so, it's not how law enforcement should treat people," McAlpin said. "I'm really sorry for being a part of something that made law enforcement look so bad."

My first thought is that a Mississippi prison would actually show some leniency to these criminals. "Just what we boys do..."

for the inhuman treatment of inmates for decades - majority black (as you would expect in Mississippi). I'm quite sure their life would not be a pleasant experience there.

The Goon Squad was sentenced under Federal law, so they'll go to a Federal prison.

Some or all of them may also face state charges. If convicted on state charges, then the state and the DOJ will decide where they should do the Federal plus state time.

I don't think Mississippi can still make state charges stick against 6 white men doing anything to black men, especially if those 6 white men are cops or former cops.

The Feds had to step in with civil rights violation charges, which seem inadequate except it already sent the ringleader up for 27 years.

How do you apologize for acts like these; this is an example of what is wrong with immunity shields for law enforcement; they should hold themselves to a higher standard of conduct.

TFG could if elected but since they did nothing to promote TFG's insurrection, I'm betting it won't happen. Everything is transactional for TFG. There is nothing in it for him to pardon these guys.

What those men endured, and how many others are assaulted and never able to get justice.

I hope the victims are doing well and healing as much as they can from this horrific abuse of power used against American citizens.

is a mostly white county that joins the city of Jackson that is mostly black. No matter what you hear or read racism is alive and well in Mississippi - I know I (white) grew up in Mississippi and left when I finished HS in the 60s. I left, went to college. I vowed to never go back except to visit relatives - moved to Texas which at the time was a great place. Now it is in competition with Mississippi. I don't think the South will ever change - although it has improved a lot since the days of the Civil Rights Movement.

I know this is harsh - but it is reality.

And let it continue?!? You know everyone in that precinct knew what was going on but didn't cross that thin blue line. They need to investigate the whole lot of them and at the very least, fire them!!!
