WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden spoke Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House said, as Israel's planned invasion of Rafah widens the grown gap between the two leaders.

The two leaders last spoke over a month ago, on Feb. 15. The White House said they discussed the situation in Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip along Egypt’s border, and efforts to increase humanitarian aid to Palestinians among the latest developments in Israel and Gaza.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is scheduled to appear at the White House press briefing Monday and is expected to discuss the call between Biden and Netanyahu. The conversation comes just days after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer — the highest-ranking Jewish U.S. official — called for Israel to hold new elections to replace the Israeli prime minister.

Monday's call was the 20th between Biden and Netanyahu since Hamas’ brutal assault on Israel on Oct. 7. It also marks the longest gap between calls — 32 days. Previously, the longest the two had gone without speaking was 26 days, between Dec. 23 and Jan. 19.

Biden to speak to Netanyahu amid escalating tensions in U.S.-Israel relationship

WASHINGTON -- President Joe Biden is expected to speak Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to two administration officials, which comes amid escalation tensions in their relationship. The two leaders last spoke over a month ago, on Feb. 15.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is scheduled to appear at the White House press briefing Monday and is expected to discuss the call between Biden and Netanyahu. The conversation comes just days after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer -- the highest-ranking Jewish U.S. official -- called for Israel to hold new elections to replace the Israeli prime minister.

This will be the 20th call between Biden and Netanyahu since Hamas' brutal assault on Israel on Oct. 7. It also marks the longest gap between calls -- 32 days. Previously, the longest the two had gone without speaking was 26 days, between Dec. 23 and Jan. 19.

Meanwhile, the White House is considering how to respond if the Israeli government ignores the administration's warnings not to launch a ground invasion in Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip along Egypt's border, without a credible plan for Palestinian civilians. Last week, his office said that he approved plans for a ground offensive there and that the military was "preparing for the operational side and for the evacuation of the population."

No more weapons. No more intelligence support. If Netanyahu wants to ethnically cleanse Gaza, he can do it on his own.

Don't get me wrong. I'm still anti-Hamas. But this shit has GOT to stop somewhere.

In the end he will likely fold and comply. We are one of Israel's few allies. To be clear, not even sure what there is to discuss.
No invasion of Rafah. Stop murdering innocent civilians.
Pretty simple.
Failure to comply will result in an immediate halt to all weapons and other assistance. Embargo on all Israeli exports to the US. That will stay that way until full compliance.

Giving the enemy a safe haven is not a usual practice in war.

Can you point to any recent examples where that happened?

In a town meant to facilitate a fraction of that. The entire northern half of Gaza is rumble and not habitable.
Where exactly are these people supposed to go when Israel is dropping bombs and missiles and tanks are blasting things?

Again, I don't recall other wars where the US army said "gosh, we can't attack the enemy in X city due to civilians"
That would just give the enemy a safe zone to hide in and would be a stupid tactic in war.
