'First Oscar in Ukrainian History' - Academy Award for '20 Days in Mariupol'
Source: Kyiv Post
The Ukrainian documentary 20 Days in Mariupol won an Oscar for best documentary film on Sunday night in Los Angeles, California.
The documentary was shot during the Russian siege of Mariupol in the first weeks after Russia launched its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022. An estimated 50,000 Ukrainians died as a result of the siege, which lasted for months until May 2022.
The films director, Pulitzer Prize-winning Ukrainian journalist Mstyslav Chernov, reached Mariupol with two Associated Press colleagues the day the full-scale invasion was launched, and remained in the city for 20 days under heavy bombardment.
This is the first Oscar in Ukrainian history, and Im honored, Chernov said as he accepted the award. Probably I will be the first director on this stage to say I wish Id never made this film, I wish to be able to exchange this for Russia never attacking Ukraine.

(15,540 posts)I did and it was heart wrenching but I felt I needed to watch the entire thing no matter how difficult it was to watch.
The sane world cannot abandon Ukraine!

(22,691 posts)You are So Right llmart! "The sane world cannot abandon Ukraine!" And I don't intend to.
I don't want to ever get to the extreme level of numbness to human suffering where Mike Johnson and his ilk currently exist.
I don't care how many times he asks for forgiveness or offers "thoughts and prayers" to anyone about anything. He's going to have to pay somewhere and somehow for his evil.
May he get EVERYTHING he deserves and in spades. Amen!

(15,540 posts)I decided to rewatch it also. As difficult as it is to watch, I think we sometimes have to "go there" in order to not forget that these people are suffering. We must NOT let Putin win this one.
