School board member bragged of drinking Fireball and Coors Light in Capitol on Jan. 6, FBI says

Source: NBC News

Feb. 27, 2024, 1:41 PM EST

WASHINGTON — An elected member of a Virginia school board —who allegedly bragged about drinking Fireball and Coors Light in the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 attack and said he was in touch with a member of the far-right Oath Keepers that day — was arrested by federal authorities on Tuesday.

Miles Adkins, a member of the Frederick County School Board in Virginia, faces four misdemeanor charges: entering and remaining in a restricted building; disruptive conduct in a restricted building; disorderly conduct in a Capitol building; and unlawful picketing in a Capitol building. Court records show that Adkins was scheduled to make his first appearance in a federal courtroom in Charlottesville on Tuesday. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.

"I drank fireball and coors lite in the capitol," Adkins wrote in a message after the attack, according to an FBI affidavit. As he left the Capitol building, he was also captured on video yelling, "Let's go get a beer, let's go get a beer!", the FBI said.

Adkins was elected to the school board in 2021. He faced calls for his resignation in June after the Winchester Star reported he had been charged with driving under the influence. The Northern Virginia Daily noted that Adkins had been identified as a Jan. 6 rioter by online "sedition hunters" in 2022.

in that so many of the participants were morons.

But, then, I suppose that comes with the territory.

They showed up on January 6th because they thought Trump would protect him. Once they realized that wasn't going to happen, they ran off and hid, hoping that some 16-year-old with an internet connection at Starbucks wouldn't turn them in to the FBI.

Since then, attendance at his rallies is down, and attempts by his pals to organize other rallies have failed. I think it's unlikely that we'll see something anywhere near that scale anytime soon. Prison for hundreds seems to have turned out to be a bit of a deterrent.

I walked the entire Capitol Mall starting at the Lincoln Memorial. When I got to the Capitol, it was closed. Maybe it was the weekend, I don't remember. But I stood on the steps where presidents take their oaths of office and reflected on what it means to be an American, to be able to stand in that the place, the seat of democracy and have the freedom to speak one's mind, how rare and precious that is in the sweep of human history.
This half-wit runs through that same building, swilling beer and liquor and yelling about getting drunk. Another of his compatriots marches through the halls with a confederate battle flag. I'd say "unbelievable", but it just isn't. Not anymore.

My taste for alcohol beverage spirits favors (1) traditional Canadian whisky, and (2) Scotch. Fireball Cinnamon Whisky was developed in Canada in 1980, but it was not until 2013 that it took off in sales in the United States. Its claim is that, in addition to the normal burning whisky taste, it also contains a burning cinnemon taste al la "fireball" hard candy. Since 2013, its popularity in the United States has continued to climb. The company which produces the spirit has also launched a malt beverage (with labeling deceptively similar to that of the whisky) which allows it to be sold in wine and beer outlets. The news story in the original post does not indicate which Fireball product (whisky or malt) the Capitol intruder bragged about consuming. My impression is that MAGA males have adopted the Fireball brand to bolster their self-perceived identity as tough guys.

he also has shitty taste in booze. I would give him another year on his sentence (however long it may prove to be) just for that. Bringing along some Lagavulin or a nice Chateauneuf du Pape 2017 would have killed him?

I think it gained popularity because some people think the cinnamon smell will mask whiskey breath if you get pulled over by the cops. Same thing with Peppermint Schnapps. And those people are wrong. Cops are not stupid. Worse yet, never try and fool a sober person when you are drunk.

Many times when I tended bar, people would order a shot of either of those just before leaving.

But it never struck me as anything more than a gimmick. Heck, as far as gimmicks go, peanut butter whiskey is a better one. And it's not something you can really savor, like a good Islay single-malt. Fireball is slam-it-and-be-done.
