Former US Rep. Mel Reynolds plans another run for Congress, wants to replace Jackson
Source: Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) Convicted former Congressman Mel Reynolds is running for the job he held before he was replaced by Jesse Jackson Jr.
At a Wednesday news conference, Reynolds announced that he's joining the increasingly crowded field running for the seat Jackson vacated last week, citing his ongoing treatment for bipolar disorder.
Reynolds says he deserves another chance to represent the district and thinks voters will give him serious consideration.
Reynolds resigned from office in 1995 after being convicted of having sexual relations with an underage campaign worker. The Democrat also went to prison after being convicted of fraud for concealing debts to obtain bank loans and diverting money intended for voter registration drives into his election campaign.

(1,663 posts)It's the Marion Barry syndrome. I live in a city and see it all the time and it isn't exclusive to the black areas. It's just weird and then the people complain about the politicians.

(40 posts)He can run despite being a convicted felon? He's not precluded from political office because of his convictions?
Is this true?

(32,097 posts)There is nothing in the Constitution denying felons the right to be elected to federal office.

(511 posts)I live in this district and this race was going to be an embarrassment anyway, but with Reynolds now entering this just takes it too a whole new level. Fox news and the rest of the wingnut crowd are going to have a field day with this, thanks to this creep.
