7 arrested in attack on NYPD officers near migrant shelter in Times Square
Source: CBS News
NEW YORK -- Two more suspects are under arrest Thursday for allegedly attacking two NYPD officers outside a migrant center in Times Square.
So far, police have arrested seven of the 12 suspects accused in the attack on Jan. 27, but NYPD officials have blasted the Manhattan District Attorney's Office after some were set free on bail. Surveillance video showed a group of men assaulting officers in front of a migrant center on West 42nd Street, police said.
The video appeared to show two officers in a struggle with a man wearing yellow, followed by a barrage of people taking turns punching and kicking a lieutenant and another officer.
"You want to know why our cops are getting assaulted? There's no consequences and we must change this," said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.

Released with NO BAIL? A gift to the MAGAts & I'd bet they're already working on ads
The mayor, if legally possible, needs to do something about shit like this.

(10,039 posts)There's a reason they were released without bail. What was the person who was being arrested being arrested for? Was a crime committed? Why did the officers escalate and go "hands-on"? Looks like a public sidewalk to me. Law enforcement doesn't have any authority to move people along from a public space unless a crime is being committed. The common refrain when an officer or officers appear to engage in dubious activity is "I'll withhold judgment until all the facts are available". Shouldn't that apply here?
This story is a Conservative gold mine and it's sad to see DU'ers just, sheepishly, going along with it.

(12,555 posts)Thats ridiculous. Its news & its important.
Video shows the cops being attacked while on the ground. Thats not acceptable. The Mayor says its not acceptable. The Governor says its not acceptable. They're hardly right wingers.
The suspect wasnt being assaulted, he was resisting.

(10,039 posts)I was responding to, " Ridiculous they were released without bail. They shouldnt be released at all." Do you agree with that sentiment?
oldsoftie
(12,555 posts)They're an obvious threat to society & there should be no bail for those types.
And I'd bet 99% of those in Times Square would agree

A 19-year-old from a migrant shelter in the 81st Precinct in Brooklyn
A 21-year-old from a migrant shelter in Queens
A 24-year-old from a migrant shelter on Jefferson Street in Brooklyn

At least two of the suspects were free on the street after prior shoplifting arrests, police said.

(11,276 posts)It is a dignity thing. They are charged and have to face judgement, if they don't face judgement and run then they are fugitives and will be put in jail or deported.

Looks real dignified in the picture in Post #29

defended themselves against police misconduct and unlawful arrest, right? I also love the, very liberal, "HE HAD PRIORS" defense. Hmmm... Do you think the NYPD knew about those priors before they decided to abuse their authority? See also, poisoning the well.
MichMan
(11,938 posts)They were just defending themselves by kicking a cop down on the ground in the face?
Surprised that someone would defend cops getting attacked like that.

(1,826 posts)When the charge is a violent crime, particularly if the accused has a prior history of violent crime arrests, is currently out on bail, or is "undocumented" (meaning a full criminal history can't be verified) then I support continued detention. In the case of some of these offenders, there is not only a checkered history of violent crime- there's a *recent* history of it.
We've all seen those stories that come up about someone killing someone else, and then it's reveled they were arrested 12 times in the past year and we get angry then and ask, "why were they on the streets?" I'm not sure how to reconcile that POV with no-bond bail to those arrested repeatably for assault.
