Bob Dole, the 1996 Republican presidential nominee and longtime leader of Senate Republicans, has been hospitalized at Walter Reed Hospital, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Tuesday.
"He is at Walter Reed not for a checkup," Reid said on the Senate floor. "He is there because he is infirm. He is sick." Shortly after Reid's comments, however, an assistant to Dole told CBS News in an email that Dole will leave the hospital tomorrow after a "routine" procedure.
"He checked himself in for a routine procedure and will discharge tomorrow," Dole's assistant said. "Doing well and watching the CRPD debate on CSPAN 2."
Reid spoke after Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, read a letter from Dole urging passage of the Convention of Persons with Disabilities, or CPRD, which is focused on rights for the disabled. Dole, who is 89, sustained an injury in World War II that left his right arm shattered.

(5,732 posts)however, he probably would have made a better republican president than any we have had in the last 100 years.

(21,155 posts)100 may be a little much (Though 100 misses Teddy Roosevelt almost perfectly!) I am inclined to say Ike Eisenhower might be hard for Bob Dole to leapfrog.

(5,732 posts)to include those republican standouts such as Warren Harding, Cal Coolidge and everyone's favorite, only to be out done by Dubya, Herbert Hoover. Ike was okay, he didn't screw things up like the others. All he did was play golf and have a chief adviser, Cliff Roberts, who wasn't a politician, but managed a racist, elite County Club called Augusta National. Ike only managed to squeeze in 800 rounds of golf at Augusta National during his time in office.

(2,921 posts)I salute him for his service in WWII, but not for the Republican work, and wish he would stop being an Republican and go Independent during the last year, denouncing Republican not the same as his Republican Party of the 70s and the 80s.

(113,596 posts)was just looking back at a bit of his career, and saw that he voted against medicare. and then there was this bit from the vp debate:n 1976, Dole ran unsuccessfully for Vice President on a ticket headed by President Gerald Ford. Incumbent Vice President Nelson Rockefeller had withdrawn from consideration the previous fall, and Dole was chosen. Dole stated during the Vice Presidential debate with Walter Mondale, "I figured it up the other day: If we added up the killed and wounded in Democrat wars in this century, it would be about 1.6 million Americans enough to fill the city of Detroit".[13] The remark backfired.
I also remember some remark he made about people on welfare (no, don't remember the precise remark), but remember calling his office and pointing out that, basically from the day he graduated school, he suckled at the govt teat, first in the military, and then in a series of elected positions.
and, of course, he was pro-war and anti-choice.

(191 posts)I voted for Clinton in 1992, but for Dole in 1996 because I knew it wouldn't matter, as Kansas always goes red now, and I'd met him. Sounds really dumb, I know. I stupidly voted for Saint Ronnie for my first vote in 1980 (I was under the thrall of a professor I had a crush on). I will never vote Republican again. You'd have to kill me first!

(191 posts)I met him twice, and he was very personable. I attended Bill Clinton's first inauguration, and Senator Dole hosted a coffee and donuts reception in his Senate office. He offered me and my friend the opportunity to watch the inauguration from his office overlooking the platform, but I wanted to experience being in the crowd, so I politely declined. I wish I had done it now! I hope he will be okay, as he is indeed one of the last sane Republicans left.

(18,652 posts)He was alone, however, without a health aide. I spoke with him - his mind seemed to be OK then but his hand was shaking. He's old and we can expect infirmity at that age.
