FRANCE TO RECOGNIZE PALESTINIAN STATE AT UN
Source: AP
PARIS (AP) -- France announced Tuesday that it plans to vote in favor of recognizing a Palestinian state at the U.N. General Assembly this week.
With the announcement, France becomes the first major European country to come out in favor, dealing a setback to Israel. The timing of the announcement appears aimed at swaying other European nations.
Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told parliament that France has long supported Palestinian ambitions for statehood and "will respond `Yes'" when the issue comes up for a vote "out of a concern for coherency."
The Palestinians say the assembly is likely to vote Thursday on a resolution raising their status at the U.N. from an observer to a nonmember observer state, a move they believe is an important step toward a two-state solution with Israel. A Palestinian state would still not be a full General Assembly member, however.

(109 posts)Between war crimes and Palestinian terrorism? I do hope that they get statehood. They should have claimed it 1948. The acts of terror would then be war crimes and acts of war. Britain will always hold a grudge. It is a shame that people can't be fair minded on this issue.

(85 posts)...the clue as well. Significant if only due to the current hard-right wing governing party, Partido Popular or PP, which in the past, with Aznar, was basically an American puppet.

(71,611 posts)Excommunication NEVER works. A people must be included in the community of nations to feel obliged to adhere to the rules and customs of that community. They have to feel they have something to lose. Right now, the Palestinians are losing lives and land DAILY and only find muscular support from the likes of Hamas. They're boxed in to a 'solution' that's being used as a scapegoat for the 'problem.'
The cruel irony that Israel, who constantly whines that their neighbors won't recognize their "right to exist" as a state, is the major roadblock in denying any recognition of a State of Palestine in the U.N. is a profoundly unethical hypocrisy.

(1,201 posts)Now we need someone to admit that Gaza is the 21st Century Warsaw Ghetto. Create two states and be done with it.

(12,008 posts)does that make you think turning the Warsaw ghetto into an independent country would have been a good solution to that situation?
chuckstevens
(1,201 posts)No. What I mean is that the Warsaw Ghetto horrified the world. Why is the situation Gaza different and why is the world not outraged? Cutting off a people from the rest of the world and having them live with limited or no medical care and little food is just as immoral in 2012 as in was in 1941.
Giving the Palestinians there own state would, in time, lead to a better situation in the Middle East.

(12,008 posts)Having a nominally independent state that's still effectively a ghetto wouldn't be a heck of a lot of help to anyone though.
