China's passport maps spark strong protests

Source: Bloomberg

Vietnam and the Philippines criticized China's decision to include disputed South China Sea islands on maps that are printed inside new Chinese passports.

The Philippines "strongly protests" China's decision to include the disputed maritime areas, foreign affairs ministry spokesman Raul Hernandez said.

Vietnam's government lodged a formal complaint with the Chinese embassy in Hanoi.

The map in the passports includes the Spratly island chain which is the subject of overlapping claims by China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and the Philippines, according to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency's website.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the island has a land area of 59,558 square meters, or 14.717 acres, which is the property of the federal government. Liberty Island is located in the Upper New York Bay surrounded by the waters of Jersey City, New Jersey, but its built portions and docks fall under the jurisdiction of the City of New York.[3][4][5] . The historical developments which led to this construction created the rare situation of an exclave of one state, New York, being situated in another, New Jersey.
