Egypt President Mursi defends new powers amid protests

Last edited Fri Nov 23, 2012, 04:31 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: BBC

President Mohammed Mursi has appeared before supporters in Cairo to defend a new decree that grants him sweeping powers.

He told them he was leading Egypt on a path to "freedom and democracy" and was the guardian of stability.

He was speaking as thousands of opponents gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square and offices of the president's party were attacked in several cities.

The decree says presidential decisions cannot be revoked by any authority.

Earlier version of story:

Egypt protesters torch Muslim Brotherhood offices

Protesters in Egypt have set fire to Muslim Brotherhood offices in several cities, according to state TV.

They were demonstrating against President Mohammed Mursi's decision to grant himself sweeping new powers.

His decree states, among other things, that the president's decisions cannot be revoked by any authority - including the judiciary.

Rival rallies have been held across the country today by supporters and opponents of Mr Mursi.

Protests planned as UN official warns of 'volatile situation

A protester in Tahrir Square late Thursday holds up a poster with the faces of Egypt's
former president Hosni Mubarak and current President Mohmmed Morsi.

Authorities in Cairo have beefed up security after the opposition called for mass protests against Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, who has granted himself sweeping new powers.

Morsi issued constitutional amendments on Thursday, giving himself powers above any court as the guardian of Egypt's revolution. At the same time, he ordered the retrial of leaders of ousted president Hosni Mubarak's regime for the killing of protesters in last year's uprising. The decree to neutralize challenges from the judicial system comes five months into Morsi's presidency and has sparked calls for demonstrations in Cairo's Tahrir Square, now ringed by riot police and barbed wire.

"Morsi is essentially taking a bit of a gamble here. On the one hand he has announced to the people in the square that he is going to retry security officials and others from the old regime who were acquitted of killing protesters during the revolution and in the months that followed. That's something people on the street here have been demanding for a long time," CBC's Margaret Evans reported.

"On the other hand, he has built these protective measures around himself. People say he's trying to grab power for himself and that they fear he's trying to steal the revolution," Evans said.

this is good, if Morsy has any notions of establishing anything other than a Democracy. It keeps the Muslim Brotherhood in check. All he has to do is rescind his declarations to seize all power.

And Egypt has another despot to overthrow.

Any powers he grants to himself will never willingly be given up by him.

I will say that I am not really surprised by this.

Which is "Egypt President Mursi defends new powers amid protests". I just ask because the earlier title of theirs from when you started this thread is not that descriptive of the whole situation, and I wonder if it's not getting that much attention as a result.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...

Except women and religious minorities will be FUCKED under this regime.

This guy is Bad News. What a waste of effort by the Egyptian people. They shed blood and lost lives to install in power a guy who will be just as robustly oppressive, only his buddies won't be the target, for a change. One step forward, ten steps back. The Egyptian people are being dragged, kicking and screaming, back towards the fourteenth century. A low down dirty shame...
