Ron Paul: Petitions on secession raise 'worthwhile questions'

Source: The Hill

Former presidential candidate Ron Paul (R-Texas) said in a blog post Monday that secession protests launched in the wake of President Obama's reelection "raise a lot of worthwhile questions about the nature of our union."

Thousands of Americans have signed digital petitions — at least one from every state — on the White House's "We the People" petition website. The administration has promised a response to every petition on the site that collects at least 25,000 signatures within 30 days. At least seven states, including Texas, have hit that mark.

Paul, writing on his congressional website, conceded that he "wouldn't hold my breath" on states, including his own, actually moving to leave the union. But he argues that "secession is a deeply American principle" rooted in the country's Revolutionary War that sought independence from Great Britain.

"There is nothing treasonous or unpatriotic about wanting a federal government that is more responsive to the people it represents," Paul writes. "That is what our Revolutionary War was all about and today our own federal government is vastly overstepping its constitutional bounds with no signs of reform. In fact, the recent election only further entrenched the status quo."

Wow! Talk about a free pass. On the one hand, the right wing media goes crazy with a make believe Black Panther party as a force in American politics. Yet, the media gives Republicans a free pass on openly entertaining the break up of our union. What ever happened to America first?

The FACT that Ron Paul's long time close friend & former congressional Chief of Staff, Lew Rockwell, is the founder of a Neo-Confederate group & was also the lead ghost writer for Ron Paul's racist & anti-Semitic newsletters, Ron Paul has other close ties to Neo-Nazi's as is seen in the pics he haas taken with these fools SHOULD have an impact on all his adherents...But they choose to ignore the FACTS & act like Ron Paul is just a little old man who wants peace. Lew Rockwell was one of Ron Paul's biggest campaign bundlers this past election cycle so the excuse that Ron Paul severed ties with him is ridiculous!!

Ron Paul has RAGED against the Incorporation Doctrine his entire political life! The ID basically forces states to comply with the bill of Rights & to Ron Paul & many other Republicans this is a violation of "state's rights! They think states should have the "freedom" to set Christian Theocracies & discriminate against non-whites & especially non-Christians!

...And this is yet another example that meshes seamlessly with all the other FACTS pointing to Ron Paul's racist & Christian views!

Yet Ron Paul has been sitting as part of the government for decades. The republicans are a joke. I live in Texas, I have seen the crazies up close.lol. they are terrified at the thought of minorities controlling elections, even here. They are all talk and no action, they all take government benefits.

I think America is at a point where maybe it would be better to self divide. I have no desire to conform to the rights way of thinking and they would rather die than to conform to mine. Would it really be the end of the world if we divided along political ideologies? Probably could never happen because of the problem with who goes where. But then again the Velvet revolution worked fairly well. Maybe for me it wouldn't be such a big deal because I find the USA and the originating philosophy to be deeply flawed. Maybe it's time to call the experiment a failure and try something different?

Don't be fooled that there is a significant number of people involved in this story.... or the Teabagger story. They are (obviously... see election results) a minority.

And there are not "red" states and "blue" states... the USA is purple.

is nothing wrong with the Union. There is something wrong with the idiots who want secession. They have to look around and recognize they don't represent the people because the majority disagree with them. That is how a Democracy works. Only dictators get their way. Guess who the dictators are that want their way.

These goobers will let off steam, b/c they know their time in the sun is almost up. Were it not for re-districting encouraged by the hopefully soon to be imprisoned Tom Delay, Texas would be blue, or almost blue. To the DU'ers that say, "let them go," I say patience. Once Texas goes blue, you will not have to worry about Ohio or Florida, it will be over. The DNC needs to fund and push an all out effort here to make that happen. At least go back to Gov. Howard Dean's 50 state strategy. It worked! Make them defend everywhere! Repugs are on the ropes and 50 states being very active will knock them out for the count. There are a lot of Dems who don't feel our party can't win in the South, but there are a lot of folks in the South that would get active in support and education of the misguided Republicans. If you want to know why Southernors vote against their interests and vote Republican, it is b/c the Republicans have misdirected their anger at lost jobs and low wages to minorities, and the Dems do not do anything down here to counter it! We have the perfect opportunity to groom Democratic candidates such as the Castro brothers, Raul and Julian. One is the beloved Mayor of San Antonio, and the other is a state representative. They are the future of our party. Please do not write us off!

No FEMA help with disasters, etc. They haven't done their homework as usual. It really amazes me how much "The Dumbing Down Of America" has succeeded. Some of these people are just lost, racist, spoiled, sore losers that probably receive more federal government assistance than many and have no clue what secession would do to their and their families lives.

There is one great way these worthless little shits can get out of this country, join the military. They get to go to foreign lands and not be here when Obama starts his mind control ray. Oh and they are always for invading this country or that so win win right?

I'm not upset about people wanting to secede. And countries have split throughout time. Look at Korea, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, the USSR. Maybe it needs to happen.

But the reality is that the majority of people in these states don't want it. So it won't happen.

If this is how people let of steam, then so be it. It beats impeachment efforts.

I really think this is something to ignore. But if they really want it, let them take the first step and cut off receipt of funding from the US government for one year, pay taxes to their state instead, for one year, and see what happens. Oh, and not send representatives to Congress and the Senate for one year.

But be wary of a natural disaster, an epidemic virus, an outbreak of violence, or simply a hunger problem or a homelessness problem, shut down of universities, no veterans' services, I could go on...

PLEASE let them try it for a year.
