Grover Norquist Defends Strength Of Anti-Tax Movement Amid Signs Republicans Are Defecting

Source: Reuters, via The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Prominent American anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist on Monday insisted that his movement was as strong as ever and that Congress would withstand pressure to raise taxes even if more Republican lawmakers are spurning his anti-tax pledge.

A vast majority of elected Republicans have signed Norquist's "taxpayer protection pledge," launched in 1986, which commits them to voting against tax increases, and it became a sort of litmus test among U.S. conservatives.

But the new House of Representatives, which takes office in January, has 16 Republicans who so far have not signed the pledge, up from six in the outgoing Congress. One new Republican senator, Jeff Flake, also has not signed.

Speaking on the sidelines of a Washington event, Norquist told Reuters: "People don't always take the pledge first when they run. A lot take it after they have been there for a while. The pledge isn't the only vehicle for stopping tax increases."

Lindsay Graham today said he'd defy Grover, guaranteeing that he will be teabagged in the next S.C. GOP primary.

Shouldn't we be concerned about clogging?

With his incredible inflated ego, I'd at least have one standing by.

.... not just things for you.

Your tax pledge has no legal or governmental standing.

No one's elected you to anything.

His rabid anti-tax position was a big negative for the Republicans this cycle. Tax cuts for the rich was about the only policy we were sure Romney really supported.

Every last member of Congress needs to hear this said aloud: Grover Norquist didn't get any votes. He's not appointed to any position. His opinion counts no more and no less than a single voter's, and anyone who says otherwise can be considered cowed, bought, or both.

The Most Important Yard Gnome In History, like a neutered dog, DOES NOT GET IT.

The fireworks ended thirty minutes ago and Grovel is still looking up at the sky.

President Obama has to do approximately NOTHING for expiration to happen. There will be no shutdowns or stonewalls. Nothing's going to get held hostage like last time. No one buys any excuse, "Debt Ceiling", "Fiscal Cliff", "Debtpocalypse" or whatever fear-laced assholish term Luntz or any of those other bastards are pushing for the purpose of allowing the precious wealthy to keep their cushy tax breaks.

just admit to the whole country that you're really promoting your scam so your already wealthy friends can grab the rest of it; while destroying what's left of the country-that includes the people your friends have already scammed, screwed out of decent wages, pensions.

so, i guess what you really want is to cut any safety net, especially for children and the elderly, while allowing these same friends to beef up their profits by privatizing. and, if those who are their victims can't afford it, well, it's social darwinism baby; even though said friends are the ones who created the environment, right?
