Outgoing Maine GOP chair says he regrets black voter comment, backs off plan to send postcards to ne

Source: BDN

AUGUSTA, Maine — Outgoing GOP Chairman Charlie Webster said Thursday he still believes there is ample evidence of voter irregularity in the Nov. 6 election, but he regrets his reference to black voters.

Earlier this week, Webster said during an interview with WCSH-TV that “dozens of black people” registered to vote in several small Maine towns on Election Day. Those people were unfamiliar to election clerks and others at the polls in those towns, he claimed.

He said at that time he planned to send out thousands of postcards to the addresses of those who recently registered to vote, believing that if they were fraudulent, the postcards would come back as undeliverable by the postal service, thereby providing evidence for his accusations.

But after the controversy that followed his comments, Webster said Thursday he was leaning toward not sending the postcards.

I met several Somalian men when I was getting my MLT degree. Very, very hardworking. I was impressed by their ability to get through the program with English as a second language -- it's hard enough without that additional challenge.

If they weren't recognized, it's only because nobody talks to anybody whose families didn't come over on the Mayflower, if not sooner. And because they're too busy working to be hunting, fishing, snowmobiling or drinking.

I don't know what Webster thinks is "irregular" about registering to vote, and then voting. Racist ass.

people of color are usually invisible to most Republicans (like when they're unemployed or need health-care). Of course that's not the case when they get uppity and just walk into town or try to vote.

Maybe these people were unfamiliar to the clerks because they were first time voters but this idiot probably never thought of that.

They do everything they can to disenfranchise black voters.

They throw a racist fit when they see blacks voting.

And then they wonder why they get so few of those votes!

If they're undeliverable they'll just get trashed anyway, so I don't think this effort would get the result his guy expects.

on BDN, I am enjoying watching the republicans "dislike" comments they find offensive. One of my comments went from over 20 likes down to 12 when the republicans finally realized this had traction with voters. ROFL!

You were GOP chair. Anyone stupid enough to try to run that excuse shouldn't be in charge of frost heave fills, let alone a political operation.

You're telling us that in small towns in Maine, The Last Refuge of White People, dozens of black people established residency so they get on the voter registration rolls. Is that it, Bunkie? Wow. Charlie, in case you weren't aware, in small town northern New England, nothing goes unnoticed. We have nothing else to do but notice.

Ignorance is skin deep. Stupid goes right to the bone and can't be fixed.
