DeSantis signs Florida's six-week abortion ban into law

A six-week ban on abortion was signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Thursday night after the state House, which has a Republican supermajority, passed the bill, 70 to 40 earlier in the day.

Senate Bill 300, titled the "Heartbeat Protection Act," prohibits abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for abortions that risk the life of a mother and abortions up to fifteen weeks for pregnancies caused by instances of rape, incest or human trafficking.

The bill makes it a third-degree felony for physicians or anyone who "actively participate(s) in" an abortion in violation of the ban. It also prohibits state funds being used in any way to help a woman get an abortion from another state, and using "telehealth" or mail to receive abortion medication.

The governor's office released a photo of DeSantis signing the bill surrounded by several dozen lawmakers.

These red states are going crazy. Absolutely. Is the white, go-go booted, little hitler term-limited? How does this stuff end?

So 6 weeks would fall around 1 week after you would expect your next period to start. If your period is only 1 week late, which periods often are, you would need to immediately figure out if you're pregnant and get an abortion that day. Impossible. Especially in Florida.

Women will die.

Besides the obvious misogyny, it is all about forcing white women to have babies so whites are not replaced in population share by people of color. It's why Hitler banned abortion.

Apr 2023

What if the women's family can sue for wrongful death/medical malpractice if an ectopic pregnancy kills them? I wonder what they would say then. Often the ones who are against abortion probably have secretly done it to one of their many mistresses. In fact, I wonder if the president would have the guts to say, "Okay, if you want to ban abortions, those women can then sue you for medical malpractice/wrongful death." Fight fire with fire.

DeSantis Signs Near-Total Abortion Ban Into Law in Dead of Night

Abortion rights defenders warn that the six-week ban poses life-and-death risks to Floridians.

Reproductive rights defenders decried the signing of a near-total abortion ban in Florida overnight by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, a likely presidential candidate for the GOP in 2024.

Republican state lawmakers, which control both legislative chambers in the state, sent S.B. 300 to DeSantis’ desk in order to bar the medical procedure after just six weeks of pregnancy, before most people know they are pregnant. Wasting no time, the governor signed the bill just before midnight.
