Florida certifies victory for House newcomer (Patrick Murphy over Allen West)
Source: The Hill
The state of Florida certified congressman-elect Patrick Murphy (D) as the winner of his race against incumbent Rep. Allen West (R).
As expected, the Election Night results have been confirmed. It is now time to put the campaign behind us. I am honored that the voters of the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches have chosen me to be their voice in Congress. Regardless of whether they voted for me or my opponent, I am committed to representing the interests of all residents of Floridas 18th Congressional district in Washington, Murphy said in a Saturday statement.
West had raised concerns about the vote. The Tea Party freshman sent a letter to a Florida elections board supervisor on Thursday that said he might take legal action over what he termed discrepancies at the polls.
The vote gap between Murphy and West was too large to trigger a recount.

(3,922 posts)West won't go away gracefully - no surprise there, he doesn't do anything gracefully.
He's now planning to sue St. Lucie county and it's all but certain that he will within the 10 day window that he has to file.
West and his psycho followers are making the rounds down here, doing little more than reinforcing the choice of the majority.
He ran in three (3) counties: Palm Beach. Martin, and St. Lucie. He was basically tied with Patrick Murphy in Palm Beach county, he took the always-red Martin roughly 60-40, but good 'ol St. Lucie, my home county, put Murphy over the top!
So West sues Palm Beach & St. Lucie! Yesterday, Palm Beach threw his motion in the garbage where it belonged.
But he still has 10 days to file in St. Lucie where he accused long-time, well-respected Elections Supervisor Gertrude Walker (who was resoundingly re-elected herself on Tuesday, btw) of "incompetence".
Keeping it classy, as usual.
Damn Communists are out to get him!

Alan West is a victim of his own self righteous pride and hubris driven loud mouth.
NOTE TO DEMOCRATS: I hope EVERYONE remembers that MID TERMS are AS IMPORTANT as Presidential election cycles. Alan West and a bus load of Right Wing Extremist Tehadists rode in on the GOP Tea Party Express wave in 2010, while lazy, complacent and disapointed Democrats and Progressives sat back an complained about how Obama was not delivering on his promisses. The GOP played us like suckers and we let em.

(3,300 posts)The "lazy, complacent and disappointed (sic) Democrats and Progressives" is a description that applies to neither me, nor my family and friends, nor 90% of DU'ers.
This was a victory of common sense. To put it in concrete terms, this was a victory of fact over fiction.

(6,335 posts)Some posters* around here like to sneer at the electorate but what are people - people who have jobs (often 2 or 3 jobs), kids, school, aging parents to care for - in other words, no time to research issues and read entire Congressional Bills (as I have seen posters here exhort others to do) - what is the ordinary person to think when even NPR spouts nothing but the Beltway groupspeak and neoliberal economics?
It wasn't just "Democrats and Progressives" who put Obama over the top in '08 - it was union members - many of whom I know for a fact are neither Democrats nor progressive - it was young people and first time voters with no history by which we could judge them part of the Dem "base" or progressive. It was Greens and even some Rs voting against their own candidate. They voted for a vision. And they voted for accountability. And for two years nothing much happened, and most of all the calls - the yells, the rallies and signs in the streets and petitions and more rallies and and and to "make the Banks pay" - were ignored. For just once, people had a pretty clear understanding of just who had screwed them, and they wanted (figurative) blood. They wanted the Banksters to pay, and the people to get something back.
We all know what happened on that front. So no, the people who voted in (or by whatever omissions allowed to be voted in) the Teabaggers were not lazy and complacent, and disappointed is too weak a word. They were savagely angry, and had a right to be. That their anger was manipulated by the right does not vitiate that.
I worked on a losing Congressional campaign in '10 - one of the winners in the '08 sweep, a "moderate" Blue-doggish Dem who disappointed even those of us who knew in '08 (I worked that campaign for him too) that he was no Dennis K. and would have to be ridden and herded hard. None the less, and despite my own disgust with the lot of the Dems, I worked to keep the Teabagger out. We lost - like so many others.
We lost because we have a system that works to make sure that people think that the only road to change is to change the letter behind the critter in DC., that if you're unhappy with the state of affairs, vote the other way next time.
The Dems have no one but themselves to blame for '10. I just fervently hope they learned something from it.
*that does not necessarily refer to the poster to who's quote I am responding. The quote to which I am responding sneers at those of us who felt that Obama had not lived up to his '08 campaign - not necessarily the entire electorate. I went off on a tangent, as I so often do.

I don't know how I got on their email list, but my gmail spam filter
put it in spam folder, which I check sometimes to make sure I'm
getting the ones I actually WANT to get. anyways... I admit to
taking some perverse delight in seeing these folks having to sleep
in the delusional bed they made for themselves.
Their desperation speaks volumes about how out of touch these
folks had/have become. I'm beginning to feel something like a real
sense of hope again for our nation, for the planet.
Things are definitely in flux, and change is in the air. Pot is even

I think they are a tie for me. Had Michelle, my husband isn't a closeted homosexual (I can say this because I am a homosexual) been defeated it would probably have been a 3-way time.
Each of them in their own way have earned my total despite.
But goodbye Mr. West. You were a horrible, hateful, lying, evil man. When Obamacare is fully implemented in 2014 you will have access to mental health care treatment.

(4,288 posts)No judge ordered this recount and the state count was certified yesterday. I have no idea how they can do this unless the Florida election law gives the counties discretion to recount on their own initiative. Something seems odd here.

After an absolute bald-faced attempt to suppress the vote, vanished repubs now shout voter fraud??!
When we called them on eroding Medicare, they simply turned the table and accused the left of doing the damage.
When they blocked a more robust stimulus, they accused the left of "failure" (even by every objective measure it was not).
They all looked away when 4486 Americans and over 100K Iraqis lost their lives for a lie, but scream bloody murder when 4 more die in Benghazi during a hostile attack.
Whatever works as reality, they try as their fantasy.

(45,850 posts)Florida elections officials Saturday certified Democrat Patrick Murphy as the winner in Tuesday's election over incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Allen West.
The certification came one day after a Florida judge denied West's motion to impound ballots and voting machines for a possible recount. Palm Beach County Circuit Court Judge David F. Crow ruled West's motion was premature because no official result had been announced.
West had raised the prospect of voting irregularities but the judge said there was no evidence any statute had been violated, the Fort Pierce Tribune reported.
