with you. Mountain top removal....WTF? How many have lost their water source from that? I lived in Lexington, KY for a few years and visited last year and there were all of these bumper stickers, "Friends of Coal." Again, WTF?

There are families in E. KY who are fighting each other over the Environment vs. Coal. From the air, one should see this mountain top removal...it's disgusting. A coal miner is willing to give his life for $73,000/year. They all die early...and then encourage their sons to do the same thing.

Look at Germany and what they have done regarding residential solar panels. Germany has very similar sunshine as does the Heartland of the US.

It's the Big Oil Boyz calling the shots. They own the Gov't. And gas drilling doesn't even have regulations? Again, WTF!
Thank you Dick 'heartless' Cheney.

The EPA is still filled with 'burrowers' from the W administration who are pro-oil. It's difficult to get rid of them when they go from appointee to civil servant.

Nobody is going to win these folks over by calling them redneck assholes. The folks down in coal country are in a tough spot and mining is all some of them know. And, yes, some of them know it is killing them, but they still have to feed their kids. I met a woman whose husband is disabled from mining, but yet she still went to that big rally in West Virginia a few years ago to protest Obama and to support coal. She wants her son to have a job in the mines. Go figure.

WMMT-FM is working to create in-depth news coverage regarding the recent increase in gas extraction in the Letcher County, Kentucky and Wise County, Virginia areas. We’ll be addressing the pros and cons of natural gas extraction in the region and explore the potential impact of the industry on our economy and our environment.

If you, or someone you know, has a story to tell about the role of the gas industry in our region, please contact us at 606-633-0108. Ask to speak with Marcie in the radio office. Or go HERE and fill out the contact form.

Also, if you are interested in joining us in the documentation of gas extraction please join our Community Correspondents Corps, a project that trains and supports people in producing stories for the radio. The project is free and open to the public; after completing training all Community Correspondents have access to WMMT’s digital recorders and production studios.

If you’re interested in being a Community Correspondent please call 606-633-0108 and ask for Sylvia.

I had to come back with a thought. Why should it be this difficult to find information? You'd think there would be 1 website (something like NOAA which has a map of the United States listing all oil, shale oil, natural gas, coal drilling sites.

NO, it's not like that at all. Think it's to keep the public from coming to their own conclusions, based on evidence that there's something going on in the environment? or .

Is there one that I missed? Why shouldn't it be on the top of a Google search list?

Near 1/2 million in NY. And they went away. Most Americans wanted it, it seems.

On the other hand, in the 20's and thirties, tens of thousands (when that was a much bigger percentage of the economy) of workers sat down, many simply on their own and not part of anything but sometimes loose affiliations, walked through the streets, shot and got shot at, . Unions and the New Deal was the result.

They made their presence felt. The same numbers today bringing things to a screeching halt would have the same power.

And if one can't make enough noise to overcome the media, maybe they ain't got as much to say as they think.

is not very helpful.

My husband is a code enforcement official and the International Building Code (which every body who enforces building codes uses ... hence International) calls for modern houses to be more resistant to earthquake shaking and not less.

In quake prone areas the requirements are even more stringent which is where the state and local codes come into play.

Funny, but I think manners is a good thing.

I feel pretty safe in my old house, having opened a few walls and seen that it was built with old cedar to double today's standards. I understand new earth quake standards allow for swaying, since a swaying tree will outlast a stiff one, but there is also something to be said about a strong house built on solid ground.

I am also sure that their old house is more fire retardant than a new house. since a fire chief died here recently and they say it is the new building materials of plywood cause buildings to collapse faster when they are on fire, the glue seems to burn hotter and faster than solid wood. .

This was larger than most, but earthquakes are not uncommon in the area. Just for an example, I ran a query at USGS using the coordinates of today's quake with a 100 km radius, and came up with 15 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or greater since 1984.
