Senate Intelligence Chairwoman calls Petraeus' resignation 'tragic'
Posted by
CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger
Washington (CNN) - Senator Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told CNN CIA Director David Petraeus' resignation is "tragic for this human being" and for the country. "He loved the job, had a big design for the job," she said.
Feinstein also made the point that "people are going to say he's a scapegoat for Benghazi and that's absolutely false," referring to the controversy over the timeline of the terror attack at the U.S. mission in Libya that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. "I know what the personal story is. It is not a cover up."

(20,776 posts)But she should know Tragic. She became Mayor of San Francisco after Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk had been Killed. She was also Mayor during the 1989 Earthquake in the City. Both Horrendous events.. Though since then she seems to have become very conservative...in her ways.
served in the military and had a secret classification. Our oath included not to compromise our secret classification. It is a court martial offense. The General know the deal. He is not above his troops. I know Mrs Fienstein knows about regulations because of her position. He should not be treated differently than anybodyelse in the military and especially being a General. They will probably consider his honorable service but he must pay the price.

(20,776 posts)I am saying that people shouldn't just brush off Diane Feinstein. I admit I held my nose, while voting for her..had there been someone else, a Democrat who was running for her office, I would have voted for them. She's getting too much like Liebermann. Maybe its time for her to retire.. She was a great Mayor of San Francisco.. but she has chosen to lean to the right...since going to Congress.
believe it or not, I was stationed at the Presidio when Milk was killed. I remember her very well. She has changed over the decades. She was more liberal then.

(7,362 posts)Sure, there might be something "tragic" underlying his relationship with his wife.
But: He is a keeper of our nation's secrets. He cannot do things that make him subject to blackmail.

Interesting the connection that she "piped up so fast" to defend the General, isn't it.

(14,180 posts)a hedge fund that specializes in firms in the defense industry. IOW, Feinstein's husband is a war profiteer. Really and truly disgusting. I voted for her this time only to protect Roe v. Wade, not knowing for sure that Mitt would be biting the dust. But that's the only reason to choose her over the Re-pig Emken.
I voted for Marsha Feinland (Peace and Freedom) in the open primary.

(106,886 posts)I agree. It is tragic for him personally all other factors aside. He screwed up personally and resigned.
If there are other issues to address, specifically professional decisions, I fully support follow up and any and all action that flows from that. Yet gloating about this man's personal foibles is just petty.
My 2 cents.

Democrats Question General Petraeus' Credibility, Integrity« Thread Started on Sept 13, 2007, 6:44am » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Democrats Question General Petraeus' Credibility, IntegrityBy Susan JonesCNSNews.com Senior EditorSeptember 10, 2007read at source> http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewNation.asp?P ... NSNews.com) - Democrats are questioning the integrity of Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. military commander in Iraq, hoping to discredit in advance anything he will tell Congress on Monday and Tuesday, when he delivers his progress report on Iraq. On Monday, Moveon.org ran an ad in the New York Times asking, "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?" The anti-war, anti-Bush group accused the general of "cooking the books for the White House" by giving an overly optimistic assessment of the situation on the ground. It describes Petraeus as a "military man constantly at war with the facts." Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she doesn't know what General Petraeus will say. "But I don't think he's an independent evaluator," Feinstein said, suggesting -- as other Democrats have done -- that he's taking his cue from the White House. Sen. Joseph Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told NBC's Meet the Press that although there has been "some mild security progress" in Iraq, the "sectarian violence" continues in Baghdad and Anbar province.Amid reports that Gen. Petraeus will oppose a significant policy change in Iraq -- including a major, imminent troop pullout -- Biden said, "I really respect him, but I think he's dead flat wrong. "I will insist on a firm beginning to withdraw the troops, and I will insist on a target date to get American combat forces out," Biden said.Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker are scheduled to testify before four congressional committees on Monday and Tuesday.

(14,180 posts)invasion and occupation. Between the deaths, the wounds (another 2,000,000+) and the displacements (both internal and external. another 4,000,000+), Iraq saw roughly 25% of its population adversely affected.
To put those numbers into perspective, that percentage would mean 75 million Americans were killed, wounded or displaced, were Iraq to invade and occupy us.
Petraeus' fate isn't tragic; it is contemptible. There's a difference, not that a war pig like Feinstein would ever understand.
