Newsnight claims 'leading Tory from Thatcher years was part of paedophile ring who raped boys at Welsh children's home'... but BBC sparks new fury by failing to NAME 'shadowy' politician

Abuse victim Steven Messham told Newsnight he was raped more than a dozen times

Editor of the London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Iain Overton, had claimed on Twitter that Newsnight would name him

The tweet prompted furious speculation online about the identity of the alleged paedophile, who is still alive

But Newsnight said there was 'not enough evidence' to name him

He was a leading light in the early Thatcher years and very well connected, I don't think he would have been a rapist but it was always said he "knew where the bodies were buried".

Stevas was a closeted homosexual brought into the Cabinet by Edward Heath who was also, as the euphemism of the time had it, a "confirmed bachelor". The yachting community in the Solent area used to be rife with rumours about the activities on Heath's yacht.

There was a nasty stench in British society at the time in relation to underage sex. It permeated many establishment institutions, not just the BBC.

...does him being homosexual have to do with pedophilia? Or a bunch of adults acting up on a yacht? Sex between adults, any kind of adults, is not the issue.

any more than Jimmy Savile's heterosexuality had anything to do with his pedophilia and abuse of girls. But the report is about a homosexual who happened to be a pedophile. Lord StJohn of Fawsley (as he became) is unknown to most and it needed to be emphasised that his homosexuality was widely acknowledged although never publicly admitted by himself. Norm was a leader in a group of repressed men in Margaret Thatchers government about whom there were several unsavoury rumours. One such rumour from the 1970's was that Mr Stevas (as he was then known) was not to be left alone with younger male members of staff at the British Library. In Manuscripts best efforts were made to ensure only female staff assisted him during his research.

I am certain that there are similar abuse/rape stories about politicians of that period who preferred girls - entertainers are not the only ones involved in such rapes - but politicians have more power and influence so are more able to cover up their crimes. It is long past time that such behaviour, whatever the sexuality of the abuser, be brought into the open.
