A Secret Service agent suspected of having a romantic relationship with a Mexican woman is dead of an apparent suicide, a law enforcement official told CNN Thursday.

The source said Rafael Prieto, 48, was assigned to President Obama's protective detail.

The Secret Service confirmed Thursday that Prieto's death last Saturday is currently being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, along with the medical examiner's office. No official determination of death has been made.

Prieto's access to Secret Service facilities had been suspended while authorities were looking into his apparently unreported and long-term relationship with a foreign national, the law enforcement official said.

You're sounding like an Alex Jones nut, baselessly seeing conspiracy theories in everything.

Leave the tinfoil hat stuff to the freepers

12. My first thought was that the man could have been the victim of a right-wing plot

to replace this agent with someone trusted by the right wing. And that raises frightening possibilities.

It seems very strange that this agent had a relationship that was not discovered by our government earlier.

Of course, it is possible that the whole story is false and that this man was depressed for reasons we cannot know such as problems in his family life or perhaps something else.

15. Oddly, the situation he was in is not quite the thing to commit suicide over.

I suspect there's something more here. A co-worker tipped off management that this affair was going on so he wasn't being that secretive about it. It's also not a given that it would have been the end of the world for his career or his marriage. If he really did commit suicide (as opposed to some freak accident) the only real thing I can think of which would cause a person like him to do it is that, unbeknownst to him, the person with whom he was having an affair with was not who he thought they were and that an investigation by his superiors brought this to light.

That kind of thing would put a person in a situation where they might consider suicide.

Secret Service guys who are assigned to protect the President are tested regularly, both physically and mentally, for fitness and, I suspect, given regular polygraph tests. A friend of mine was in a position in SIGINT that was very, very sensitive and he regularly had to take polygraph tests. I can't imagine someone in the SS, at that level, wouldn't have to do the same.

why this is a story? Is it because a Secret Service Agent has never committed suicide, or because he was caught dating someone from Mexico?

18. Anyone in the position of protecting the president is newsworthy.

If they die or get hurt or commit a violent crime or whatever. If there are people that are around the president 24/7 that have mental issues, then that is definitely worth public attention.

It doesn't seem quite like something to commit suicide over. He hadn't been fired yet and looked unlikely to be. Maybe he had other problems?
