NEW YORK (AP) - Two young brothers swept from the arms of their mother by the violent sea at the height of Superstorm Sandy were found dead in a marsh Thursday, a tragic exclamation mark on an epic storm.
The boys, 2-year-old Brandon and 4-year-old Connor Moore, were sucked into the swirling floodwaters as their mother, Glenda Moore, tried to escape her SUV after it stalled Monday in the deluge on Staten Island, one of the areas hardest hit by the storm that has claimed 90 lives.
"Terrible, absolutely terrible," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said as he announced that the bodies had been discovered on the third day of a search that included police divers and sniffer dogs.
"It just compounds all the tragic aspects of this horrific event."

Glenda Moore, and her husband, Damian Moore, react as they approach the scene where at least one of their childrens' bodies were discovered in Staten Island, New York, Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012. Brandon Moore, 2, and Connor Moore, 4, were swiped into swirling waters as their mother tried to escape her SUV on Monday amid rushing waters that caused the vehicle to stall during Superstorm Sandy. Police said the mother, Glenda Moore, was going to her sister's home in Brooklyn when she tried to flee the vehicle with the boys, only to have the force of the rising water and the relentless cadence of pounding waves rip the boy's small arms from her. (29,251 posts)Sounds like there was a lot of confusion because he said a guy tried to throw a planter through his door; the woman said she tried to throw a planter through his window. Her car got stuck in a sinkhole next to his house. Really, really sad.

(15,882 posts)His recollection was markedly different, especially the fact that he said he only saw a man.
Lots of excuses.
She resorted to trying to break his back patio door with a flower pot, but never gained entry I think. Good doors.

(1 post)People such as this man who refused to give help to save 2 little boys couldn't save himself if he had to. A cowardice is what he is made of. He is a loner has been since his school years. Likes to live in neighborhoods of close built homes, giving him a feelings of safety of security in numbers. There fore if he were to need help it would be only yards away to seek safety or get it. Does not have any leadership qualities nor would most of his kind belong to any organization or membership group. Usually single or divorced because of his dominance over another. His way or the highway. Still a cowardice. Would deny as a witness to any seen criminal act. Would probably hide from attacker of an ongoing act of a rape on a women or child. This man could hardly be called a man, who is scared of his own shadow. It is to bad he could of been a hero & there are more like him. This guy is solely for himself, a one way person disturbing no one until that day may arise when he cries out for help & no one can hear him. He resides in a world wrapped around him only.

(15,774 posts)I have lived through hurricanes, tornadoes, wild fires and quakes at different times of my life. I am fascinated with the human response to this. I have received help, given help, and been turned away.
From all this I have learned a few things:
1. Despite what you see on the evening news, more people are kind than not when you ask for help. Yes, people take care of their own first but many will also help.
2. I pass no judgement on those that do not help-I reserve that job for God or that person's conscious. There is karma or God's judgement. We all fall short but we receive the mercy we show others.
3. These incidents are the equivalent of moral pop quizzes. They are not necessarily graded, but they tell your a lot about yourself. It is a time to reflect on 'your' character.
That is just my 2 cents worth.

(911 posts)she should be arrested.
They were given a mandatory evacuation. Yet she waits until Monday during the storm to leave? She had plenty of warring and because she can not take responsibility for herself her two kids are dead. Its sad and should be a crime. Sorry if that sounds mean. But 2 kids lost their lives because she is a irresponsible person. These kids did not have to die!

(1,014 posts)She LOST HER CHILDREN. Some of the things I have read here today just leave me with my jaw hanging open in absolute shock and disgust. As a mother of 2 young boys myself, her story shakes me to my core. If I was her, I probably would have already put a gun to my head. The thought of watching my children swept away from me makes me just want to die. I can't imagine the pain she is in right now. Yet I get the distinct impression from some of the posts I've read here today that many here feel she "deserved what she got." It makes me ill.

(14,881 posts)Health care workers do not necessarily have the options that the rest of us have. They are trained, expected and required to work during emergencies, even when it includes abandoning and endangering their own families.
It is entirely possible that she was unable to evacuate before the storm hit and her home started to flood.
Interesting, however, that you think *she* should be arrested. Why not her husband? Convenient, I suppose, to lay the blame on the mother. Fact is, we also don't know all the family dynamics involved.

(37,748 posts)"These kids did not have to die!"
They certainly did not. Edmund Burke wrote, "all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing" and that is precisely what the neighbor did. However, I completely understand those how place all the blame on the mother, predicated on a lack of information about her ways and means-- it's convenient, it's simplistic, and it allows us also to rationalize doing nothing, whilst defend our callousness regarding tragedies that happen to others.

(1 post)I watched the interview with the man who refused to help this woman and give her shelter. What a jerk. He tried to say it was a man asking for help, like THAT made it alright to refuse to help. What a selfish, horrible man. I hope his dreams haunt him.

(4,150 posts)I hear everybody either jumping on the man who supposedly didn't open his door or the mother. None of us KNOWS what happened. This occurred during an EMERGENCY.
It's BULLSHIT to say that a) the man fucked up or b) the mother shouldn't have been out.
Nobody has the details necessary to make this decision. It was an UNFORTUNATE event. It is a shame it happend. It's sad. IT was a tragedy. But assigning blame? Sorry. That CANNOT be determined.

(417 posts)Bless this poor family, what a tragedy to lose these babies. How can a man see this woman with her babies outside his door and not help them, especially in the middle of a hurricane?? I cannot understand this at all.
